Methods of Combat

Learning the methods of combat in the Kouryou Kai is quite an interesting experience. Most of the training is in the sparring. A student's reactions are often conditioned to be more effective, rather than learning the "right" moves and then having to use them. We work with what's already there. And this is true for all of the training.

Combat skills do not come from learning techniques that are static and controlled. As a student learns, they must work at training their reactions, natural flow, ability to remain relaxed, and so forth. Within this section you shall find the methods and the fundamental principles of combat. If you attempt to follow everything flawlessly, you may stunt your development. The idea isn't to be a drone. You are a unique individual, and so allow everything given to fit you. This doesn't mean you should slack and do everything how you want to. No, it simply means to allow these methods to fit into your personality and natural ways.

Rather than rely solely on techniques, make sure you practice the training methods. This is where the foundation of a good fighter lies. A Karate student gets beaten by a street thug because the thug is used to actually fighting, while the student is used to pretending to fight. The trick left out too often is to train in reaction, withstanding hits, and actually fighting. Find yourself as many training partners as you can. If you hear a guy say he loves to "box", invite him to a sparring match. Say you want to see where you stand as a fighter and would appreciate a good ass whooping. It's always good to act like you think you're gonna lose. Don't act ignorant.
