The Wonder of Language
The Wonder of Language
Come back soon to read about my personal journey to understand human language and why languages and linguistics fascinate me so much. In the meantime, please enjoy the excellent links below and see for yourself!
Linguistics Links
- Introduction to Linguistics
- A clear and brief introduction to the field of linguistics and its major components for those who are curious to know more. The page also has links to linguistics programs at universities and colleges worldwide.
- Linguistics Society of America
- The official website.
- Language Miniatures
- "Mini-essays about human language in its endless kaleidoscope." Short and very interesting readings, with new ones added regularly.
Language Links
- The Human Languages Page
- An expansive site with lots of information.
- Foreign Language Links
- A great selection of links for those learning, or interested in learning, French, German, and/or Spanish.
- Foreign Language for Travelers
- This site offers the chance to learn key phrases, words, and numbers in the language of your choice. Great for travelers, or anyone who wants to explore a new language.
- Ethnologue: Languages of the World
- A catalog directory of more than 6,700 languages from all parts of the world.
- 101 Language
- This online store sells audio, visual, and written materials to help in the independent study of 101 languages. I absolutely love this site and could spend hours looking around. You can find resources to help you learn almost any language you can think of, and in the major languages the selection is wide.
- Sounds of the World's Animals
- How people interpret various animals' sounds in a slew of languages, from Afrikaans to Vietnamese. Way beyond "meow" and "oink". :-)
- Audio Forum
- An online language resource store, with 285 courses in 183 languages--they claim it's the world's largest selection, and they're probably right. The website is dull and lacks detail, though, so I recommend you order their print catalog (free) by calling 1-800-243-1234. It's a language lover's dream catalog.
