Overview
Myst was the first game of the series, released in 1994. It was created by two brothers, Robyn and Rand Miller and was an instant success. It led to the creation of other games, such as Riven which was released in 1997. The story begins with a man named Atrus. He writes you that someone has been destroying his books and suspects that it is one of his sons, Sirrus or Achenar, and asks for help. You are left on the island of Myst to explore for yourself what he means and what to do. Then you find Sirrus and Achenar trapped in different books on the island, put there by Atrus. Each plead with you to find the missing pages from their respective books to free them, telling you that the other brother is the "evil" one who destroyed their father's books. It is your job to find the missing pages and return them to the books, and it is up to you to decide which one to trust. Of course the books that Atrus are talking about are not just ordinary books. Each book is a link to a different world. There is an art of writing books such that the worlds one writes about becomes real. Each world is called an "age". There are four ages that one can link to from Myst: Selentic, Channelwood, Stoneship, and Mechanical, each with their own theme. The age of Myst was created by Atrus, and so were these ages.
