i was born in Queens. everything was going great in my life. our family was poor, but we managed. my mother and father both
worked in factories. my little brother and i didn't go to school. we usually just stayed home, and did anything around our small house that had to be done. then one day disaster struck. i was twelve years old, and it was a very hot summer evening. i was
outside, with my friend, Perky. Perky was a newsie, and was used to rough times. my family were all inside the house. then i hheard a scream, "FIRE!!" and i knew it was too late for my family. all of the exits to the house were blocked by a horrible fire. a few
hours later, the fire was gone, but so was my family. they had all died. the small, but respectable funeral was held that day. well, i became a newsie with Perky that day. and ever since, i've been delivering papers day and night in the NY city streets.
