RAZOR'S EDGE

Let's honor America's TRUE Heroes

Maybe the tragic events that happened this week in NYC and Washington, DC will make us realize who the REAL heroes are of this country. It is not the $25 million quarterback, the shortstop that makes hundreds of millions, not the $85 million non-playoff performer just signed by the Islanders. This country has been awarding the super glamorized athletes who do not merit neither the money nor the glory that they have been getting.

The real heroes in today's world are the volunteers who put their lives on the line, the men in the armed service protecting our nation's security, the policemen who protect us against criminals and terrorists alike, and the firefighters who have been protecting us for hundreds of years. The horrific tragedy in the Nation's Capital and New York City have brought out the best in Americans trying to help and save victims of this catastrophe.

Hundreds of firemen and policemen have died in the efforts to save victims of the double airlines crash into the WTC twin buildings on Tuesday. Right now, thousands of volunteers have migrated to NYC to help in the cause to save as many victims as possible who may have survived the terrible collapse of the two buildings. Today, five firefighters have been rescued from the mass of debris remaining from the collapsed buildings.

Another story of heroism is what happened on the fourth airplane that crashed outside of Pittsburgh. At least three of the passengers decided to take matters into their own hands and overtake the hijackers who were piloting the plane which experts think was headed to Washington to take out a landmark in the Nation's Capital. One of the passengers cell-phoned his wife, while another one called his parents. Both indicated that they were about to attempt a mutiny on the ship to force it off its destructive course. They succeeded in forcing the plane down in the fields outside of Pittsburgh. Whether they saved the White House or the Capitol Building from being destroyed, no one knows. What is known is that because of their heroics and sacrificing their lives for their country has to be rewarded. Those men who wrestled the control of the plane out of the hijackers' control deserve the Presidential Meal of Honor.

The National Football League has canceled its games for this weekend. The MBL has canceled its games since the attacks on America began. More should be given! The players are much too greedy, much too egotistical and represent what this country is turning into. The mass of true heroes descending on America's biggest city is proof that not all is lost. There is still true valor alive and well in America. It is time these phony "heroes" give up some of their wealth and contribute in ways more appropriate to being a "true American."

The so-called "heroes" of pro sports are a travesty to what is true and right about America. They represent an egotistical bunch of spoiled brats who only care about "No. 1" They should take a look at NYC and see the people who are far greater than they are in courage. It is time that they donate a large portion of their unworthy salaries to the victims of this tragedy. Any pro athlete who is making tens of millions who is not moved by these events and does not offer some of his or her over-inflated salaries to the families of the victims has no heart at all and does not rate the status of "hero" that the media heaps upon them day after day.

Right now the awarding of hero status and money to these self-centered pro athletes is completely opposite of what it should be. The true heroes - the volunteer firemen, the police, the armed service, the teachers in this country are not being paid for their true gallantry. The ones who capture the headlines for scoring a winning touchdown or scoring the winning goal are not saving lives or helping our effort against the real enemies of this country.

The effort of the true heroes of this country should not go unrecognized. The "fake" heroes should feel ashamed of being so selfish and contribute in the recovery of victims or donating money to their families. Instead of sitting in their mansions counting their millions, they should go to New York City and search the rubble side by side with America's true heroes, donating their blood, sweat and tears in a latch-ditch effort to save at least one more life buried beneath that smoking rubble. Once some of the pro athletes actually perform something worthy their "hero" status by risking their lives, donating their time and money like the true superstars already in NYC, can they finally live up to the hero ranking that they never really earned.
