Time: 1991. Mason and Cassie had gone to San Francisco to marry and Mason had Julia tag along, ostensibly for closure to their relationship. However, all did not go as planned. Warren, in an effort to save Cassie from herself, kidnapped her as she was ready to walk down the aisle. Later, as Julia tried to analyze the situation and Mason's true motives for wanting to wed Cassie, Mason got defensive and angry at Julia for butting in, then shocked her with the claim that all the blame for what was happening was solely Julia's responsibility. Julia was, of course, outraged...but Mason pressed on. This is where the conversation picks up.

"Oh no, you don't!" Julia struggles to stand up using her crutches. (She had hurt her ankle during the trip.) "I'm not going to let you lay...lay this mess at my feet!"

Mason is adamant. "Why not? That is exactly where it belongs! If you'd come to Paris with me, none of this would have happened!" (Referring to Mason's beach proposal after he and Julia made love.)

Incredulous, Julia groans, "Oh, well, that's insane!"

Mason volleys another shot. "You turned me down, Julia! So I took Cassandra. The rest is history."

Julia furiously points out, "Well, I didn't exactly put a gun to your head and make you take Cassie to Paris!"

Tensions continue to rise as Mason fires back, "Maybe not a gun but it worked just the same!" Julia hobbles past him and exclaims, "Please!"

"You are responsible!" Mason continues to insist, heatedly. "You did something dishonest!"

At those words, Julia looks at Mason, clearly vulnerable. Mason tells her, his eyes intent on Julia. "You stole something from me! And now you're holding it up for ransom." Mason's voice drops as he looks away, now in a reflective mood. "And now you have it...have it locked away. In your eyes, in your smile, in the way you tilt your head when you try to understand why I've done something that I've done. And when you talk about Samantha..."

Mason's words have an effect on Julia. Her voice, which holds both sadness and pleading, asks, "Why are you doing this?"

Mason seems to ignore the question and continues, "I've tried every way I could think of to get it back. I've asked nicely for it..." Mason shakes his head. "I tried to steal it when you weren't looking. But somehow, it just won't budge! I think it's stuck in your clutches with crazy glue or something so strong..." he pauses, "that, I think, it may never belong to me again. Maybe it's yours forever."

Julia is near tears and confused. As she stares at Mason's profile, she speaks. "I don't know what I took."

A frustrated Mason stares at her. "My heart!" Julia's face is full of vulnerability and filled with sadness and surprise. Her lip quivers ever so slightly. Mason softly asks, "Would you mind giving it back, please?" He seems almost drained from the encounter, speaking even lower, almost at a whisper. "If you could see your way clear to releasing it, then maybe..." he becomes silent. "I'll be free to love somebody the way I love you."

Mason's confession leaves Julia looking stricken and staring after Mason helplessly. Both have reached all that they could handle, emotionally.
