Time: 1986. After a horrifying accident involving an argument between Mary and her husband, Mark McCormack, in which Mary is killed by the Capwell Hotel sign on the hotel roof, Mason is left destroyed. After he confronts Julia, who was a witness (and Mark's attorney in his upcoming rape case against Mary, in which Julia vowed to destroy her client, unbeknownst to Mason), Mason takes off. Against CC's advice to let Mason be, Eden is determined to comfort her brother. This is a magnificent scene. I hope you enjoy it, sad as it is.

Eden stands silently, as she spies Mason sitting alone outside. It is night and a soft breeze blows. Eden, hurting for Mason, approaches him. "I thought you'd be here." Mason is silent. "Mary always loved this place."

Mason sounds as if he has been crying. Tears still lace his voice. "I'm fine, Eden." However, Mason appears to be anything but fine.

Softly, Eden asks, "Do you want me to go away?"

Mason replies, "Whatever you want." At the same time, though, he shakes his head in a negative gesture.

Eden sits beside Mason. She, too, is devastated by Mary's death. Her voice is low and sad. "I'm so sorry, Mason. I know how much you loved her."

Mason's tears threaten to overcome him as he manages a reply. "She died unhappy. I did that, Eden." Mason puts the blame on himself. "Why couldn't I forget about the trial? All it did was make her miserable!"

Eden is resolute and shakes her head. Her voice is almost a whisper at first, but grows stronger with her impassioned speech. "You can't change that. But you did love her and she loved you! You two had something that people search an entire lifetime for. What you have to remember is how much you loved each other."

Mason is haunted by what could've been. "She was pregnant. She loved children. If only we'd gone away somewhere!"

Eden's reply is heartfelt and simple. "Mary was very lucky to find you."

Eden's words are too much for Mason. He stands up, exclaiming, "God!" Self-mocking, he adds, "Yeah, lucky!"

Eden also stands, and seems desperate to get through to her brother. "Mason! You taught her what real love was for the first time in her life!"

Mason, predictably, does not see things this way. "No, it was the other way around, Eden. I was selfish...and stupid! I couldn't stop hating what had happened to her. And now..." Mason's voice trails off as the tears come again, Mason's composure lost, if only for a moment.

Eden tries to reason with Mason. "You had nothing to do with an accident."

Guilt eats away at Mason. "I should've been there. God, if I'd only been there with her!"

Mason turns to his sister. "Do you think she knew how much..." he pauses, trying to get the words out. He now seems desperate for reassurance, "...how much I loved her?"

Eden's eyes hold a wealth of sadness and pain. Her eyes mirror Mason's as she looks at him. She nods, her answer almost inaudible. "Yes, she did."

Giving a small nod, Mason moves past his sister, who now stands behind Mason. Eden opens her heart. Sadly, she says, "I love you, Mason. I wish I could take away some of the pain."

Mason looks to the black sky. With tears still thickening his voice, he replies, "I hope...she's right...and that there is a heaven. And I hope she's there now."

Finally, needing someone to hold on to, Mason turns to Eden. Eden approaches her brother and embraces him in a comforting hug. Mason's face shows his massive despair and pain as he hugs Eden back.
