Saying I Love You...

Download a sound clip of this transcript.

Time: 1988. Mason and Julia were arguing a case in court...a case that Mason took on as a way to have some degree of contact with Julia, since Mason was married to Tori and unable to be with Julia as he wished. However, after Julia's client, a surrogate mother, collapsed on the stand during Mason's questioning (Mason was representing the biological father), Julia exchanged some harsh words with Mason at the hospital; Mason, who had had enough, fired back. After it was found out that Mason did not cause the problem and that the mother and her premature baby were okay, Mason dropped the case and Rita, Julia's client, was allowed to keep her baby after Mason's plea to the father was successful. After they leave, Julia and Mason are alone...and Julia, with difficulty, tells Mason some news that he does not want to hear.

After Mason's former clients leave, Julia approaches Mason. "About what you said to the Liptons...I hope you know how much that means to me."

"I'm glad," Mason replies. It turns quiet and Julia makes a little comment. "Well..." She slips on her coat, clearly nervous. Mason is immediate in his notice of Julia's demeanor.

"Why do I get the feeling that you're going to tell me something I don't want to hear?" Mason asks warily.

Julia manages a sad smile and she confesses, "I'm not going back to the firm. I really think you and I...need to go our separate ways." Julia's voice is low.

Mason, watching Julia's face, replies, "Well, that's hard to imagine. I've grown accustomed to having you in my life."

Julia still manages to smile bravely. "And I'm not leaving out of anger. In fact, I wanted to apologize to you for the way that I acted." (She says something I can't catch) Julia continues, "And...and what I learned was that I was wrong about your motives and I learned how right I was to have loved you."

Mason is deeply affected by Julia's confession and tries to interrupt. "Julia..."

Julia, however, stops whatever it is that Mason wanted to tell her. "Wait, Mason. Because if I don't do this, it won't get done and it needs to be said." She remains brave and still tries to smile, albeit sadly. Pausing to collect her thoughts, Julia adds, "With all of our clashes and differences of opinion, I really think that you and I would've been great together." By now, some tears begin to well up in Julia's eyes and seep into her voice. Mason stands, transfixed, as he listens to what Julia tells him. "And I'm really sorry..." Julia sighs. Her composure has faltered a bit, and she tries to collect herself, "I'm sorry that it didn't work out. And I really hope that you'll be happy with Victoria."

Giving one last smile, Julia says, "That's it." She begins to walk away but pauses when Mason calls out, "Julia, wait. Don't go."

It is Mason's turn to say his peace. "I'm not going to let you walk out of my life." He approaches Julia.

Julia wipes away a few tears and pleads with Mason, still being kind. "Don't make this any harder for me. This...this isn't easy. And we just need to let it go because I...I don't want the disappointments anymore."

Mason doesn't admit defeat, but instead says, "Listen to me, Julia. I've been living a lie and that's what has to end, not us. I love you, Julia. And I'm going to tell Victoria that...that my marriage to her is over." It is Julia's turn to stand in a state of surprise. Mason reiterates, as he walks toward Julia and takes her in his arms, "I love you...and I'm going to make it work. I promise you."

Julia has tears falling down her face, as she looks down. Mason lifts her gaze to his. Hugging Mason, Julia mouths, "I love you" to Mason and kisses the side of his neck, closing her eyes.
