First Meeting

Time: 1985. Place: The State Street Bistro. Mason has had everything taken from him thanks to CC exacting revenge on Mason for ruining his wedding to Gina (to get Brandon) since Mason declared that since Sophia was never declared dead after her disappearance, that CC would be committing bigamy. As a result, CC got Mason fired from his job as district attorney and took Mason's home. Because of that, Mason had his law "office" at the State Street Bistro, where, among others, his clients included a madam by the name of Ginger Jones. What follows can only be described as a comedy of errors, not to mention a somewhat awkward first meeting between Mason Capwell and Julia Wainwright. Read on!

**********************************************************************

Mason, looking a bit rumpled with his tie draped around his neck, sees a lovely young woman, who happens to be Julia, (who has come to Santa Barbara to care for Augusta after she was blinded in the tunnel explosion) sitting at his "office" table. "Well, I must say, Ginger's certainly hiring a better breed of employee these days!"

Julia is immediately prickly, though she also seems a bit curious and amused. "I beg your pardon?"

Mason puts Julia at ease, or so he thinks. "Oh, it's all right. I work for Ginger, too. Though probably not as hard as you do." Mason decides to quench his curiosity. "Tell me...since you mostly handle her...uh, carriage trade, would...would you mind telling me how much you charge? Um, uh...I'm not making untoward advances, just sort of professional curiosity. Do you...um, do you get more than a hundred dollars?"

Julia, who has been staring at Mason while looking a bit put off, but also quietly letting him put his foot in it, finally decides to respond, and seems to play along. She leans over toward Mason, who sits across from her, and says, as if divulging a huge secret, "I make more than a hundred dollars for cab fare."

Mason seems very impressed. "Wow. You must be pretty good at what you do!"

Julia responds, "I'd like to think so. Although what I'm not very good at is talking to strangers. So if you wouldn't mind going back to..." Julia waves her hand a bit, "wherever it is you came from..."

Mason suddenly starts to put the pieces together and realizes that Julia is not what he thought she was...a prostitute. "Wait a minute. Don't you work for Ginger Jones?"

Julia seems to delight in Mason's obvious embarrassment. "I don't know who Ginger Jones is, although I can guess." Julia fidgets a little and gives a brief smile and laugh, as if embarrassed by Ginger's stock-in-trade. "I'm not exactly into that kind of thing."

Mason is instantly apologetic and contrite. "Ohhh, I beg your pardon. I...I just assumed...you see, I was expecting...uh, I'm very sorry." Mason punctuates his apology with his hands. "Silly me!"

Julia echoes Mason's words. She seems to want to get rid of him now. "Silly you!" Julia gives another somewhat short laugh, and continues. "You won't mind, then, if I ask you to leave?"

Mason is quick to fill Julia in. "Well, actually, this is my table. My...office...so to speak and I, uh, do have some work to catch up on." Mason puts his nameplate on the table. "So I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave." Mason opens his briefcase.

As Mason is talking, Julia grabs the nameplate out of curiosity. She is stunned by what what she reads. "You're Mason Capwell?"

Mason confirms this. "That's right." With that, Mason grins.

Julia is shocked, at first. Then she lets out a laugh. And so goes their first encounter!
