Time: 1985. Julia is alarmed when she catches her friend, Brick Wallace, with a gun in his hand at the Lockridge estate, where he had found said gun in a desk drawer before Julia appeared. She is further alarmed...and skeptical...when Brick explains that Jack Lee is trying to kill him. (Jack was a former lover of Julia's. However, this Jack Lee is actually an impostor, holding the real Jack prisoner, which no one knows. He is responsible, along with Dr. Renfro, for stealing Amy's baby.) Julia does the only other thing she can think of to stop her friend from making a mistake. She goes to Jack's place of business to warn him. However, she instead encounters her other close friend, Amy Perkins, Brick's fiancé, who works for "Jack Lee"...and is shocked by the disarray in the office.
We hear Julia's voice before the door opens to where Amy is. Amy is trying to clean up. "Jack? Jack?" Julia's voice is anxious.
Amy looks up as Julia enters. "Julia?" she says, stuffing another sheet of paper into a shredder. The floor is littered with tons of shredded documents. Amy is a bit surprised to see her friend.
"Oh Amy, hi." Julia is rather urgent. She is dressed in a black tank top and red skirt. "Have you seen Jack? I...I really need to find him and I'm catching a plane and I...I... Do you know where he went?"
Amy's voice is soft as she tells Julia, "Jack has left town."
"What? Did he say where he was going?" Julia is still rather excited.
"No, he just told me to clean up and close the largest office." Amy sounds a bit frazzled.
Just then, Julia takes in the shredded paper covering every surface. Twirling around, Julia asks, rather shocked, "Amy, what has been going on in here?"
Amy, at her wit's end, throws some of the shredded paper that she is holding in the air. "Jack said that Brick waited for him and then jumped him." It is clear that Amy is concerned.
What Julia says next only makes the worry more intense. "Great. That explains the gun."
Amy becomes more upset. "What gun?"
"Brick has a gun," Julia explains.
"Where did he get a gun?" Amy asks, worried.
"I don't know," Julia responds. "All I know is that if you see him, you ought to talk some sense into him!"
Amy rounds the desk and stands in front of Julia. Amy's frustration seeps through as she tells Julia, "It won't do any good. Julia, I've been trying to do that ever since I lost the baby. He doesn't listen to me!" She continues, "Now he's got it in his head that Jack had something to do with the disappearance of the baby."
Unconvinced, Julia tries to make sense of this development. "I don't think Jack would do anything like that."
Amy is comforted by Julia's opinion. "I'm glad that you think he's wrong, too."
"Now he thinks that Lee's trying to kill him." Amy sighs.
In a firm voice, Julia answers, "I doubt that."
Amy, however, doesn't seem to know what to think and asks again an important question. "Why does he have a gun?"
Julia is at a loss to answer. She replies, a bit frustrated herself, with, "I don't know, Amy!"
Amy recounts what could be causing Brick to be on alert. "I know that somebody did try to kill him once. That's when Renfro disappeared. Now Jack is out looking for Renfro. He thinks that he has something to do with the disappearance of the baby, too."
"Do me a favor," Julia requests. "Forget about Jack and worry about Brick?"
A frightened Amy nods. "Believe me, I am!"
