“All paths have taken you to Nowhere....."
A yellow light from a cigarette lighter flickers on and off through the blackness. The light shines long enough to see the outline of a man’s face. He continuously puffs the cigarette, inhaling and exhaling deeply.
Sebastian V.O: I can’t remember the exact date let alone what year it began to happen. I know that my mind was young though because the world had just begun to teach me things. There were things that I didn’t understand but I still had that passion to learn.
Sebastian V.O: One night there was a play playing in Sector eight of the slums. My parents took that opportunity to show me what the people were raving about. The play was called “A plan to breakout”. It symbolized then what was going on in the world.
Matthew: Jack Gibson, wasn’t he amazing?
He walks over to Sebastian who is staring at a poster of the show. Their parents are not far from them and are talking.
Sebastian: The entire play was amazing. There was never a dull moment throughout. I’m getting goose bumps right now thinking of the things I want to write down in my notebook when I get home.
Matthew: You’re a writer? Have you read any work by Khel from Hesselink?
Sebastian: I've read the poems he posted in the national newspaper.
Matthew: My friends tell me he is the greatest writer that has ever walked the face of this planet. I would read some of his work if I could read.
Sebastian V.O: That’s where I meet Matthew Summers III. I always wondered if chance encounters actually happened like that, you know, the way they happen in the movies. One causal day you accidentally bump into a person that is going to form your entire future. A future you probably could have avoided if you were not that clumsy or decided to sleep in on that day
The camera fades to black
Sebastian V.O: It was not long that same night when our lives were changed forever. The reason behind the murder of our parents remains a secret to this day. Was it an apparent robbery? An attempted rape? Or another common “Just because I can” killings. Those types were very common in the slums.
Sebastian V.O: It was not long that we had found the people responsible and extracted our revenge upon them. Along with Matthew and are two best friends, Raphael and Basian
The camera fades to the quartet in an apartment building. Sebastian walks down a narrow hallway, eyeing the numbers of the doors. Matthew, Raphael, and Basian are close behind him. He stops on the door with the number 911.
Sebastian leans his ear against the door. Brings one of the glock up out of his coat and bangs on the door with it. The others now pull out their guns from their jacket. A man opens the door and the gunfight begins.
Sebastian unloads four shots into the man’s stomach and then tackles him to the ground, opening the door for the rest of his team. Matthew somersaults into the apartment and lands on his back, with a gun in each hand he fires away with reckless abandonment killing two guys.
Cut to Sebastian with guns extended left and right. He fires upon men trying to get their weapons out, killing them. He seems to be walking to one specific man who is nervously trying to draw his gun
He is then looking down the barrel of Sebastian’s gun. A hesitation….
Man: I did it for survival. They had something my son needed I took it….I had to take it….
Sebastian blasts a hole in the man’s forehead and unloads his clips into his chest. Raphael yells of a threat of an intruder and Sebastian quickly turns around, his black coat swirling in slow motion, and blows the intruder away who has come through the open door.
The camera dissolves into a close-up of Sebastian. He breathes hard and closes his eyes tight. The group now out of targets makes their way to the exit. The camera slowly booms upwards from the man’s body to reveal a sea of dead bodies.
Sebastian V.O: The job felt so good and the job was so easy that it slowly turned into our profession. We became in demand. The innocents of the slums grew tired of the slumber the gangs and drug lords had put upon the slums. We had become mortal superheroes.
The camera fades into a large room where we see Matthew standing up on a makeshift stage talking to a small group of men who are huddled around the stage.
Matthew: It will not be long before you will join us in our war. You will become our army against the gangs and the drug lords that poison our streets. We will then use our armies to form a better future for the people of the slums.
Matthew: A lot of you have grown up in the slums not knowing how this place got the name. During the war of the Mejia, the users of mejia began to advance on all fronts and seemed to be wining the civil war. The government began to house the prisoners of the war in this sector of the “City”.
Sebastian appears at the entrance with a rough looking middle-aged man(DeNiro). They take off their shoes and walk towards Matthew.
Sebastian: You would think most people would know all this stuff. Right, Ian?
Ian(DeNiro: Your friend Matthew seems more content with their complete brainwashing and besides who wants to listen to the real story…..the truth hurts.
Sebastian: The real story?
Ian(Smiling): Exactly, what I said Sebastian.
Matthew(Cont’d): Now most hardworking people cannot support their own loved ones. Most are being forced out onto the street to live and fend for survival. And what do the well to do people of the “Region” do? Nothing. They seem to be doing all right by themselves and they don’t give a fuck about what’s goin on in the slums. It is obvious to me and it should be obvious to you that the people of the Region are in league with the gangsters, drug lords, and prostitutes. There is no other way to explain their wealth. Those people are our enemy has well.
Sebastian: How are you so sure that the people of the region are helping the gangsters?
Ian: And are you defending them? I have actually sneaked over there and he is right about that. They too must be eliminated before we can truly see the sun shine here again on the slums.
Sebastian: A war against them is not going to solve the real issues. We should dream of being united all under one flag, don’t your think?
Ian: I don’t dream anymore.
The camera pans towards the window and zooms into the night sky. It them pans down onto many men running from all different directions.
Matthew and Sebastian and Ian are running down a back alley with rifles in their hands chasing two unarmed men. They finally corner them against the wall. Matthew steps forward and ushers in Ian to finish of what they have started. Ian rushes one of the men, takes out a knife and stabs him, the man falls to the ground screaming out in agony.
Matthew: Keep going! Ian, Keep at it! This man is not your friend. You don’t want this man to die peacefully.
Ian bends down and thrusts the knife towards the man, quicker than before, with more of an impact this time. He continues to do this and Blood spits up onto his face. From out the darkness peers a head that of an old woman. She cautiously walks over to the trio and puts her arm around Matthew and looks down has Ian continues to thrust in and out.
The camera fades to a couch. Sebastian sits alone looking up at the ceiling wall pondering something. Matthew enters the room and walks over to him.
Matthew: Sebastian?
Sebastian eyes wander off the ceiling wall and directly onto Matthew’s face.
Matthew: I heard that you got yourself injured while on a mission a couple days back, what happened? Are you losing those instincts that used to make you draw at the sight of trouble?
Sebastian eyes Matthew and then looks away from him. Matthew looks at the table near Sebastian and sees a book, which he grabs.
Matthew: It’s “Who’s Life” by Khel….I didn’t know you still believed in his words.
Matthew flips through some pages.
Matthew: Do you still plan to write that book on your life?
Sebastian glares at Matthew.
Matthew: I see that you’re still getting over that…. thing. Am I brining out the worst in you Sebastian? Good, maybe you’ll finally learn to harness your anger and put it where it belongs….the guilty. Hate and Anger can be like weapons if used correctly.
Matthew leaves and Sebastian picks up his book and returns to where he was reading. But now he is unable to continue, the book begins to shake from his trembling. He slams the book down hard against the table.
Fade in on a small office. Sam(Cage), a middle-aged man, sits at his desk twirling his pen staring at James(Law). The camera pans over to a clock, which reads 11:52 am. Sam gets up to look out the window.
Sam(Sadly): Everyday I wake up hoping that one-day the sun will raise upon this city. That it’s rays will eliminate the darkness that has engulfed these streets.
He reaches over and opens a dossier, examining credentials
James: Sergeant, I don’t know how much help I can be on this operation. I don’t have that sort of mentality anymore. I got rid of it when I found my wife.
Sam (Ignoring him): The man in this picture here is becoming a thorn in the city’s backside.
Sam points to a photograph in front of James. It’s a candid shot of Sebastian looking over a bridge.
Sam: Our sources say that he is living in the seventh sector of the Slums.
James begins to read the file on Sebastian.
Sam(Cont’d): He will be charged with the act of depriving a citizen of his natural rights.
James: Excuse me?
Sam: He has been putting bullets into the head and bodies of citizens of this city. Along with his terrorist group called the “System” they are becoming vigilantes.
James(Still reading the file): What do you care if they are helping you with your job?
Sam(Closing his fist): No one is above the law. Not the gangsters and not those vigilantes.
James: I’ve been told that there are several hundreds of murders each week here in your city. Most of the people that are murdered are innocent bystanders that are in the wrong place when these gang wars erupt.
Sam: Those people are not to be defended.
James: I wouldn’t dream of it.
Sam turns and walks back towards the window. He gazes outside.
Sam:We are sending you into the slums to locate him. I know you know your way around those parts of the city.
James places his hand under his chin
Sam: Please remember you have no authority or jurisdiction here in the city. I don’t want to here any shit from upstairs, okay? This is supposed to be an undercover operation, so the shit stays... undercover. You find that bastard that means you find us. We’ll decide what action to take. Do you understand me?
James: Loud and clear.
Fade out
Fade in:
Fade in on a small church. A crack of thunder and rain begins to pour down from the darkened skies. Inside the confessional box, Sebastian holds a gun to the black airway between him and a priest.
Priest: Assassin, why do you feel you must take my life?
Sebastian doesn’t answer. He grips the gun tightly and readies himself to pull the trigger.
Priest: The book condemns the taking of lives for whatever costs they may be. Trust me son, I know you don’t want to pull that trigger. The real enemy is still out there waiting to strike.
Sebastian (Breaking his silence): What do you mean? The enemy is still out there?
Priest: How old are you?
Sebastian: My age doesn’t matter.
Sebastian’s eyes darts around the church. He sees a troop of young girls walking into the church. He stares at them for a moment.
Priest: And did you always want to become an assassin?
Sebastian(Stern): I do what I am good at.
Priest: I hope your employer’s have paid you well assassin. I am now at peace with myself and am ready to die. May your sins be forgiven?
Sebastian hesitates for a moment and raises the gun from the priest’s head.
Sebastian: If you decide to stop preaching the lies of the “Book” I will let you live.
Priest: That is something I cannot do. And you must do what you are good at? Maybe you haven’t found your true calling yet?
Suddenly, within moments of Sebastian pulling the trigger, bullets explode around him. Sebastian turn, rolls out of the confessional box, and starts firing in every direction. Another loud explosion occurs that leads the ceiling come crashing down on us.
Blackness creeps across the screen.
Fade in on a small hospital room.
Sebastian: What happened to me?
Sebastian rolls over to his side and picks up his head. He’s seems to be in a large room full of beds and people who are getting attended to by nurses. A flash of memory hits Sebastian and he screams to check if he is dead.
Nurse(Maria Bello): What are you doing?(She holds his shoulders down) You’re in the 2nd street hospital sir.
Sebastian: How did I get here? Am I injured? Who are you?
Sebastian checks his arm when the beautiful nurse places her hand upon his. Their eyes meet for the first time.
Nurse: No, you are not hurt. You miraculously survived that explosion and I don’t know how you did it. But your priest friend was not so lucky, he died some hours ago. (She begins to walk away). My name is Anastasia and I will help you with whatever you want, within reason of course.
Sebastian lays his head back onto his pillow
Sebastian: If only you could help?
Anastasia: I wish I could help you… Sebastian. Yes, I know who you are I’ve read the stories they print about you and your organization.
She takes a step in his direction.
Anastasia: Why do you feel you have to kill to enlighten?
Sebastian: Sometimes I pray for other worldly powers that I could use to bring hope to everyone around me. The only power I can use right now is a gun. And if I could enlighten those who would hurt the innocents I would but I can’t do it.
Anastasia: Then there is truly no hope for us.
The camera pans to the window and slowly zooms in on the black sky.
The camera pans down from the night sky onto the hospital where Anastasia is attending to Sebastian’s wounds. The camera fades in and out of the room. We see Sebastian’s health gradually restoring but something still seems to be bothering him.
Another day, Anastasia brings him a piece of paper with a song written on them.
Anastasia: It’s a song written by my little boy. I remember reading somewhere that you liked to write lyrics and stories. Read this for me then?
Sebastian: I used to do that when I was a little boy….a lot with my mother actually.
He smiles in a moment of memory of his mother.
Anastasia: What made you stop?
Sebastian: The same thing that makes a young man evolve into a man.
A brief silence between the two is broken when Anastasia asks Sebastian to write her a song. He stares at her with a blank look on his face.
Sebastian: What would you like me to write about?
Anastasia: Something from (She points to a spot on his chest) your heart.
He shakes his head okay.
The next day Anastasia comes to his side.
Anastasia: Have you finished writing your song for me?
Sebastian: I have one more line to write and will sing it for you in a few days. I need to practice a little bit, I don’t want to show-off all at one time.
Anastasia(Full of spirit): I can’t wait.
Sebastian gets out of his bed and begins to walk to the window. The black sky looks down at him. Anastasia walks over to him and rests a hand on his shoulder.
Fade out
Fade in
Anastasia, carrying some bags, walks out of the hospital and up the street. Behind her, two men wait in the shadows. They speed up. One of the thugs grabs Anastasia’s handbag and throws her to the ground. The other thug grabs her by the next and drags her into a nearby alleyway. He begins to take of his clothes. Sebastian suddenly appears behind them. A roundhouse kick sends the thug into a nearby dumpster. Anastasia goes crawling in the opposite direction.
Sebastian turns to the other thug with Anastasia’s handbag. He begins to walk towards him. The thug begins to panic and nervously pulls out a gun. Sebastian runs and grabs him before he can fire. The two wrestle around for a bit and then…BANG! The smoke clears and the body of the young thug are under the feet of Sebastian.
Anastasia crawls her way to safety. Sebastian comes running over to her; he tries to help him up. Anastasia suddenly wrenches free and slaps Sebastian across the face hard.
Anastasia: Don’t you fucking touch me?
Sebastian: It’s me Anastasia….it’s Sebastian
She goes to attack him once more. Sebastian blocks all of her attacks and then grabs her arms together.
Sebastian: Stop! I won’t hurt you.
She realizes that it’s him. Anastasia apologies to him and he gives her bag back.
Anastasia: You wouldn’t hurt me?
Sebastian: Some thugs tried to rob you but everything is okay now.
Anastasia turns and sees the dead body of one of the thugs.
Anastasia: Is he dead? Could-Could you walk me home?
Sebastian: That’s fine by me
From the level of where the thug lies dead we look up at Anastasia’s face as Sebastian lead her away from him. She looks shocked.
The camera cuts to Anastasia’s home.
The house is run-down and very spare. The door creaks open and a light turns on
Sebastian: So I should get going, right?
Anastasia: Maybe you should stay for a bit.
From out of the bedroom comes running a small boy no more than six years old. He runs and clings onto the leg of Anastasia
Small boy: Mom, your home!
Anastasia: Gabriel, this is Sebastian. Sebastian this (Picks him up) is my little bundles of joy.
The camera intercuts between Gabriel and young Sebastian. A small resemblance of a child’s innocence.
Sebastian: Where is the father?
Anastasia: He abandoned us. I’m over feeling sorry for myself. We don’t need because we will survive on our own. (She tickles the nose of Gabriel)
Sebastian walks around the apartments. He stops in front of a candid shot of Anastasia and Gabriel along with the father. He grabs it off the case and examines it.
The camera fades to black
Sebastian V.O: Touching wasn’t it? Was I about to burst inside? All the years of anger build up inside of me about to reach a boiling point by the picture of a young family. I am now thinking of quitting this life of mines and moving out to the mountains of Wamego with her and Gabriel. A sign of weakness?
The camera cuts to Matthew as he stares at a cracked frame of Sebastian
Sebastian V.O: Matthew sure took it as one.
Fade in on a street. We pan down into the heart of the commotion. Cars, civilians, and buses, the city goes about its business. The camera pans over to Ian, he carries a black book bag across his shoulder, ducks and weaves his way though the crowd. Just missing a light he decided to hop onto a local bus.
The camera cuts to a balcony where Sebastian is overlooking a portion of the slums. The alarm goes over and he goes back into his apartment and opens the door. Ian comes in carrying his book bag.
Sebastian: What’s in your bag Ian?
Ian(Taking a seat): Nothing the System can’t solve.
A brown cat jumps onto the balcony and peers it’s head in. Sebastian sees this and uses his head to invite the cat in. Ian, looks up from what he is doing and is taken back when he sees the cat.
Ian: Tell it to go outside. Now.
Sebastian: Still afraid of cats?
Ian: I’m not afraid of them I just don’t feel like crying right now, you know? There were Charlie’s favorite animals. Cats…..(He smirks)
Sebastian: What do you have for us now? (Pointing to the book bag)
Ian unloads the book bag onto the table. A piece of rope. A 9mm handgun. A photograph of a stern looking white man.
Sebastian: Caine Noble….The guy that runs the syndicate?
Ian: There is a new man in charge now . He wants to get rid of the dead weight of the syndicate. He wants the old boss, Noble, dead. So he has put up a large contract on his head. I wanted to let you guys have a crack at it.
Sebastian: This will be my last crack at anything. I’m through with all of this. I’m taking Anastasia and moving to the mountains. The higher we go the further away from our troubles here.
Ian: You’ve found a way out the city?
Sebastian: Yes
Ian just looks at him. Sebastian comtemplates something.
Sebastian: Come with me Ian.
Ian: My place is here. I wont and can’t run away from it. (Looks away for a moment) So, you’ll do it?
Sebastian flips the gun into his hand and looks it over. He cocks it and looks at Ian. He nods his head yes.
Ian: It’s easy to use a gun but even harder to let it go.
Fade in on Anastasia’s bedroom. Sebastian and Anastasia lie together on the bed. Sebastian is reading a book to her quietly.
Anastasia: How come you never speak of your parents? Or of your past ?
Sebastian: My past is made up of a string of terrible days
Anastasia: How bad could it have been?
She turns away from the book and looks into his eyes. He looks back down at her.
Sebastian: I have to complete one last job
She turns away from him
Sebastian: It’s the last one. It’s a favor for my partner Ian
Anastasia: Murder? A favor? When are you going to learn Sebastian.
Sebastian: I’m doing this city a favor by killing this one Anastasia. If I could I would want to do this job for free that’s how strongly I hate this piece of filth. (A pause). It will be the last time I pick up a gun. From now on it's just you, Jordan, and me.
Anastasia(Sarcastically): All that for me?
Sebastian: I’m serious.
Anastasia: And after you do this favor for this buddy of yours will you be free? Free of him and Matthew’s System?
Sebastian: That buddy of mines has become more of a mentor to me. I owe him my life and I have to do this for him so I can be free of him and Matthew. After this we are out of here on the first train. I promise.
Anastasia: I’m going to hold that promise to you.
Anastasia crawls over the bed and hugs Sebastian tightly. The camera booms upwards and pans out the window towards the night sky.
It then pans down on Matthew, who is sitting on a terrace over looking the slums. Three men walk onto the terrace. One of them is Ian.
Indigo: We’ve located him Matthew. He’s with Anastasia.
Matthew: Anastasia….Anastasia…Anastasia….I’d never thought for a second that Sebastian would ever find love.
Matthew continues to stare aimlessly across the slums. Ian slithers his way towards Matthew.
Ian: You didn’t tell me that you want Sebastian dead?
Matthew: Did it really matter? You probably would of thought of some clever way to slip him the details, if I had told you?
Ian: We should have agreed on this matter together Matt. I don’t like the way this thing is headed. For you to organize a strike against your enemy and...You’re...friends....
Matthew: Maybe I should I have told you about it? (He turns to face him) After all you did tell me that secret he was keeping away from me. That he was leaving us to continue the war here in the slums. (He sighs)
Ian: It is his decision. Stand by him Matthew. By the looks of things here you have plenty of supporters who would willingly die for you.
The camera pans up on Indigo.
Matthew(Growing a bit agitated): Your missing the fucking point Ian!
A beat.
Matthew(Cont’d): We are supposed to be like a family. You do not abandon your family for an outsider, do you? Of course not. Sebastian and I are like blood brothers. We are the same person and if one of your limbs is not functioning properly….you cut it off.
Ian shakes his head no-no.
Matthew: Ian, your heart is torn in this matter.
Ian: I only want to see the “System” survive and finish the goals it set out to finish. This is not one of them.
Matthew: I want to see Sebastian die. The System wants to see Sebastian die. Your former employers would be glad to see his death too….I think that is enough for you.
Ian: Yes, but he doesn’t know this. Just give me one more chance…
Matthew(Cutting him off): One more chance for what? Ian, if you want to prove your loyalty to the system and me then stand down
Ian(Frustrated): You do this then you better make sure you kill him. You better make sure that he is dead or you better make plans to kill yourself.
Ian begins to take steps back away from Matthew. Their eyes deadlocked on each other’s. He turns and walks out.
Fade in on an office. The camera pans over to James who is going through some files. The camera dissolves into James leaning his head against the wall. The camera dissolves again to James reading over a clipboard, he stands up has Sam walks into the office.
Sam: Got anything?
James: I think I’ve found another link to our suspects. There was a church bombing a couple weeks back. Reports here say that a man entered by himself. Guns in each sleeves. Looking to blow away the priest of the church.
Sam (Looking over his shoulder): I remember that case. Showed people that they are not even safe in church. (He cracks a smile).
James: But yet the eyewitnesses couldn’t I.D the bombers
Sam: Common commonality in cases down there in the slums.
James: What about that boy who said the assassin saved his life by acting has a human shield to protect him from the blocks that were falling from the ceiling. He should be able to place our suspect at that scene.
Sam: I asked that kid some questions. He couldn’t remember a dam thing and was a waste of my time.
James: We need to get him back in here again.
James sits quietly staring at the clipboard. The camera pans over his shoulder and stops showing a picture of Jordan on the clipboard.
The camera cuts to Sebastian and Anastasia are walking down a street hand in hand with each other at night. Jordan flies a paper airplane some paces ahead of them. Anastasia stops by a small shop’s window. There is a small blonde doll in the display. She begins to get choked up a bit.
Sebastian: What’s the matter?
Anastasia: I remember wanting to own that doll so badly when I was a young girl. I asked my father to get me that doll for my birthday….
Fade in
Anastasia appears to be much younger. She is playing on seesaw set with her father. The scene is playing in slow motion. The camera pulls back a bit showing the disarray of the playground. It doesn’t matter much to Anastasia and her father as they continue to swing each other up and down. Anastasia jumps of the seesaw set and glides through the air landing on her feet. She throws her hands up in excitement
Anastasia: Yes!
Her father walks over to a bag and pulls out a gift, which he gives to Anastasia. She opens it. It’s the blonde doll. Anastasia glows with excitement. She runs and hugs her dad who lifts her up in the air and down again.
Then, there is a moment of waywardness. Anastasia looks up at her father and asks him something.
Anastasia: Daddy, why did you touch me there?
The scene fades into the present time and zooms out from the blonde doll’s face. A tear rolls down the cheek of Anastasia. She then runs and hugs Jordan tightly. Sebastian turns and stares at the blonde doll. The camera pans up towards the night sky. It then pans down on a bar somewhere in the slums section.
Bar Owner: Are you going to order something or what?
James looks up from a book he is reading. He places it on the table, the book is “Who’s Life” by Khel.
James: Yeah, hmmmm some water would be fine.
Bar Owner: Water? Whatever…
The bar owner curses his luck and walks away. The door then opens and two men walk in, we notice the green glow from their eyes. They take seats not far away from James.
Man #1: I’m betting my savings on Maxx Crimson. There is no way anyone is going to beat him. He will win the “Challenge” for sure!
Man #2: Maxx Crimson!?!? You’re going to be joining the legions of homeless people on a stupid bet. (He begins to laugh hysterically)
Man#1: He will win the Challenge tomorrow. You wait and see.
James: Challenge? What’s the challenge (He notices the green glow in there eyes and squints a bit)?
The two men stop their conversation and slowly turn their attention to James. They look him up and down. One of the men just dismisses him and goes back to what he was saying. But the other man stops him, raising a finger to hush him.
Man #1: I wouldn’t expect you to know anything of the challenge? It’s a competition run by that Syndicate big shot Calvin Barret. It is a one-day event that takes place in the sewers and labyrinthines underneath the city. There are many traps, and other obstacles, in the way, designed to make it extremely difficult for anyone to survive.
Man #2: But if you survive you get a chance at “Freedom”.
Man#1: They offer this to few very, very brave people. More than likely most people die. But if one succeeds they can get freedom from the slums. A new life…far away from here….Most people say it’s a hoax and that they trade you off has labor to the slave mines in Delano. But, it’s still fun to hope.
Man #2: That it is….
The bar owner gives James’s his glass of water. He chugs it down and wipes his mouth. In the background we can here a faint sound of a piano playing. The sound slowly grows louder around us. The camera fades into a room where the only light coming from the middle where Jordan is singing and playing a piano.
Jordan(Softly): Their plan is knock us out now that I can explain. But I over stand that there truth is all lame. I’ll learn to hold cannons that shoot balls of flames. Right in their mouths then I carve my name.
Jordan continues to sing his son as a montage begins:
1)Sebastian reads a book at a small table. He writes down notes in a book.
2)Matthew on his knees praying.
3)Anastasia packing a suitcase.
Jordan(Getting louder): Boom, from outer space he comes. Blunt in his mouth with his hand on his gun. Kids crowding him, asking him if he be clapping and shooting guys
Sebastian cocks a gun and places it in a black bag.
Jordan(Getting louder): He’s becoming a hero or is he a movie start, will he become a martyr revolutionized.
Matthew talking to indigo, he stops walking and whispers something in his ears.
Jordan(Screaming):What is his race, nation, or creed? Is he Arabic, black, Latin, white, Asian because they need. Is he real, fake or scared? I want to be like him so I throw my hands in the air. Ball up my fists and put it across my heart. And now lets scream together….let the bloodshed start.
Fade out
Fade in on Sixth sector of “Nowhere”. An overheard view of the sector shows many sewer holes open up. The “Challenge” is about to begin. Spectators fill the streets. We see banners of all colors. The camera zooms in on a troop of young boys playing flutes. In a bar Sam and James sit watching the festivities.
Sam: I had no idea that the Challenge was still being held down here. An escaped prisoner started it some decades ago.
Man (O.S): Attention all competition in this year’s Challenge. Please report to your stations because we are about to begin the opening ceremony.
Sam: Now the head of the local syndicate, Calvin Barrett, is representing the challenge.
James: Isn’t that Ironic?
The camera cuts to an over-pass where a big man is jumping up and down, pointing into a small stream. His growing excitement has attracted more and more bystanders. The camera pans over to the stream where we see lots of money filling the stream. People begin to jump off the walkway and into the stream, crawling to gather whatever they can put into their pockets.
The camera track to a black car trying to weave it’s way through the crowd. The man in the back, Calvin Barret, doesn’t understand what is going on. He rolls down the window and screams for people to get out of his way. He then barks to the driver to hit them if they will not move.
Calvin Barret: What is going on here? Why aren’t these people at entrance to the Challenge?
Driver: It seems someone has thrown a ton of money overboard into that stream. People are going crazy to get the money now.
Calvin Barret slowly unwinds his window and peeks his head out.
Calvin Barret: Who in their right mind would do that?
Suddenly a gun is thrust into his face. Sebastian is holding it. He slaps Calvin in the face, knocking him back into the car. Sebastian opens the door before Calvin can lock it.
Calvin: What is the meaning of this?
The Gun goes off. A Deafening sound. The blast knocks Calvin hard against the other side window. His blood splatters across it.
In slow motion, Sebastian walks to the driver’s side window. He fires five times through the window, killing the driver. He gets into the car and peels off. He quickly weaves his way through the enormous crowd.
The camera cuts to a close-up of Sebastian. He looks determined.
Suddenly, a group of similar black cars pulls out behind him and begin to follow him. The cars continue to follow Sebastian, firing rounds at him. The noise of gunfire then sparks a riot among the spectators. They all run out into the street in panic.
The camera switches to James and Sam. James scans the area. He finds Sebastian’s car just as he turns the corner going away from him.
James(Yelling): It’s him!
Sam: Who?
James: Sebastian!
James races down to a nearby waiting car. Sam follows. Next to the car a police officer talks into a walkie-talkie
Cop: Someone has killed Calvin Barrett. His men are trying to catch the assassins.
Cop(Through the walkie talkie): Good, let the animals ravage themselves. It’s just another power struggle within the syndicate.
James jumps in the car with Sam trying to catch up to him. James starts the engine and takes off in pursuit. Sam is left to curse to himself.
The camera switches back to Sebastian. Behind him, one of the following cars, crashes into a nearby store. The last two remaining cars continue to chase him. They speed up until they are both side by side. Sebastian leans out of the window to his left, shooting the front tires of the car. He then shoots down the driver and his partner. It sends the car hurling into a set of other cars. The explosion is amazing.
Sebastian turns his head to the right in slow motion. He sees the other car still beside him. The driver smiles at him and then shoots out his front tire, which makes the car swerve and crash into the wall. The other car comes to a stop.
The driver gets out, gun drawn, and makes his way to Sebastian’s car. Sebastian opens his eye. The camera slowly pans over to the driver side window. Sebastian reaches into his pocket and pulls out a gun. He fires. The driver is killed.
Sebastian opens the car door and stumbles out. Another gunman appears. He fires at Sebastian…
Sebastian rolls to the ground. Draws a gun and returns fire. He kills the gunman.
A second gunman appears running from behind a fruit stall. He fires at Sebastian.
A young girl stands confused. Bullets all around her. She begins to scream.
Sebastian runs at the gunman. He dives forward shooting. One shot hits him. Sebastian rolls on his back and fires four more shots into him. The gunman slowly falls to the ground. He manages to get a shot off before dying. The shot hits the young girl nearby…
Sebastian’s P.O.V: The bullet makes a small hold in her forehead. She falls on her back.
Sebastian runs over to her and grabs her up in his arms. The camera intercuts between the young girl and a young Sebastian. They both cry. Suddenly, a car pulls up. Sebastian draws his gun. The man in the car is James. He gets out and orders him to freeze. Sebastian wraps his jacket across the young girl. He makes a break for it. James lowers his gun and walks over to the body.
Fade out
Fade in on Sebastian in a run-down phone booth. He is struggling to keep the phone together in order to make his call.
Sebastian: Hello, Anastasia.
Anastasia: Are you okay? Is the…the job done?
Sebastian: Yes, it is. I’m going to get my money now and then we’re leaving this city for good….okay?
Anastasia: Okay. Sebastian…remember…I love you
Sebastian: Always
Sebastian puts the phone on the hook and exits the phone booth. Anastasia does the same. The camera zooms out to show her surrounded by James and Sam. James talks to Anastasia.
James: You know what he does when he’s not with you, right?
Anastasia: That won’t change the way I feel about him.
James: He is a hired gun. A killer. It doesn’t matter what mindset he is under…he is still kills people as his profession.
Anastasia: So do you.
James: If and when I kill people I’m doing it in defense of the law and to uphold the laws of this city. I do not kill people to try and become a folk hero. I’m protecting the innocents by the way of the law!
Anastasia: Are you? I see many innocents come into my hospital. Some of them end op dying because of your defense of the law.
James: No.
Anastasia: You and him are the same. You both kill bad people for a living. But while you do it in hopes of a promotion Sebastian does it heroically.
James: Well now he has the entire syndicate after him because of that hit he pulled on Barrett
Anastasia: And by putting him behind steel bars would save him?
James: I think so.
Fade in on a harbor hours later. Sebastian walks along the bridge alone, waiting for someone. There is a white mist all around him. Sebastian takes a seat on a bench. He takes a look at his watch. He looks out towards the water
Sebastian P.O.V: Blackness with the growing white mist slowly coming into his surroundings.
Suddenly, a loud sound of a boat comes sailing into the harbor. Sebastian hesitates to pull his gun. The boat docks. Sebastian rises to his feet and curiously examines the boat. It seems as if no one is aboard it. He cautiously walks towards it, now pulling out his gun.
A man appears in a doorway.
Sebastian: Is that you Ian? Where is my money?
A close-up of Ian. In slow motion he notions to someone else before drawing an automatic weapon. He fires at Sebastian.
Sebastian, startled, begins to run. Bullet tracks follow him wherever he runs to.
Ian, along with a dozen men of the “System”, get out of the boat in pursuit of Sebastian. Ian sees Sebastian duck into a warehouse. He notions to everyone to converge upon that area…
Sebastian closes the door to the empty warehouse shut. He bangs his head against the wall. Pondering his next move for a bit. He enters another clip into his guns. Cocks them and looks out a nearby window.
A gunman raises his gun when he sees Sebastian face. But is too late to pull the trigger. Sebastian kills him and then ducks down has bullets devour the window.
The warehouse door opens. A gunman slowly peeks his head in. It is blown off by Sebastian. He kicks the door shut again.
Sebastian(Screaming): Ian! What are you doing? We’re friends.
A loud explosion. The warehouse door is blown off its hinges. Sebastian back peddles as more men armed with automatic guns enter the warehouse. In slow motion he continuously fires upon three men who try to enter consecutively.
Ian (Towards Sebastian): It’s not my doing!
Ian raises his gun and unloads on the warehouse. He stops, noticing a back door to the warehouse. He runs in that direction.
The camera returns to Sebastian. He jumps off a large steel box, diving in the direction of a man who is about to draw his gun, he fires down at him firing. He then falls to the ground on his back, and empties another clip into him. The man falls down dead.
Behind him, a man fires in his direction. Sebastian swirls around and fires back with three shots to the head and four to the man’s stomach. In slow motion, he falls to the ground dead.
The camera begins to boom upward as Sebastian, with guns drawn in each direction, back steps his way to the back door. The door then opens and Ian puts Sebastian into a chokehold
Sebastian (Trying to break away): What is going on?
Sebastian is forced to drop his guns as he tries to break the chokehold. He head butts Ian, rolls on the ground and picks up his gun. They both have a gun on each other.
Ian: Drop it!
Sebastian: You drop it
Ian: I’m sorry that it has to end this way Sebastian.
Sebastian: I thought you had quit working for the syndicate. Thought you were still there keeping up appearances just to get us jobs.
Ian: I have quit the syndicate. They don’t want you dead….Well now they probably do….Matthew is the one who wants you dead. Your leaving town still linked to all those murders. And your methods are changing Sebastian.
A smirk comes across Sebastian’s face. He begins to laugh.
Ian: I’m not kidding now okay? You’re fucked up now.
Sebastian: So there is no money?
Ian: No, no money.
This makes Sebastian laugh even harder.
Ian (Cont’d): There will be no money for you to start a new life.
The statement once again strikes Sebastian as being very funny. Ian is not amused. He cocks his gun and then pulls the trigger. An empty CLICK. Sebastian then reaches into his waistband and pulls out another gun. He points it at Ian’s eyes.
A beat.
Sebastian slowly lowers his gun
Ian: You’re not going to kill me?
Sebastian: No. I’m a professional. So call it professional curtsey. But if I ever see your face or Matthew’s face I wont hesitate to kill you both
He begins to walk away
Ian: What about your money?
Sebastian: Forget the money.
Ian: Sebastian wait! Where are you going now?
Sebastian: To ask Matthew for my freedom face to face. And pray to god to forgive me that I had to kill my friends here today.
The camera tracks across the sea of dead bodies in the warehouse.
Ian: I wish I had freedom.
In slow motion, Sebastian turns and looks at Ian. A gunshot goes off. A gun falls from the hand of Ian; he has shot himself to death.
Fade out
Fade in on Sebastian running through the streets of the slums. In his right hand is a picture of Anastasia and Jordan. He cringes the picture hard. The camera then cuts to the outside of Anastasia’s apartment. We see Sebastian about to put a key into the keyhole. Suddenly, Anastasia begins to scream.
Anastasia: Run away Sebastian! The cops are here. They are going to arrest you!
Sebastian backs away from the doorway. He takes out a pistol and checks it. From behind him James appears with a gun to his head. He orders Sebastian into the apartment building.
James: Don’t make any false moves Sebastian
Sebastian: How do you know my name? Have we met before?
James: We haven’t meet before. I never needed you for hit job
.
Anastasia appears in the living room with Sam. She wants to run to Sebastian but Sam holds her back.
Anastasia: I’m sorry I couldn’t warn you about the cops. They came right before you called me.
Sebastian (Still with a gun to his head): Did you pack your stuff?
Anastasia: Yeah…
Sebastian (Smiling): Then everything is okay.
The camera cuts to the basement. A car pulls up and Matthew gets out. He looks beaten up and blood is dripping from his clothes. He limps over to the elevator.
Sebastian: So you’re a lawman I suppose?
James: Yes, that’s right. The lawman that is going to bring you into justice.
Sebastian: The same lawman that will bring the gangs into justice. The same lawman that will crack the syndicate? You guys are a joke. Do you even know who the real enemy is?
The elevator doors open. Matthew crawls out of them now holding a gun. He is bleeding badly. Getting weaker. He manages to get over to the door.
James: I know what you are doing is wrong. Maybe you should join the force. We could use a guy like you on it. And then you will be on the right side of the law.
Suddenly Anastasia reaches into Sam’s waistband and pulls out a gun. She stands and points it nervously at James.
Anastasia: Let him go!
Downstairs in the basement of the apartment building a dozen cars are pulling up. Thugs of all sizes exit the car. Guns drawn. They make there way into the building.
Anastasia: I said (Cocks the gun) Let him go!
Everyone is suddenly silent. The room’s silent could now only be broken with the sound of a pin drop. And then….something drops. Outside Matthew has collapsed against the door. Sebastian and James run outside and look down at the floor, blood. They drag Matthew’s body into the room and lock the door.
Matthew(Weakly):I couldn’t help it….Sebastian
In a pool of his own blood. Matthew picks himself up to the level of Sebastian
Matthew: I could not see you go. See you abandon me. I would much rather have seen you dead.
Sebastian: Who did this to you?
Sam(Looking outside the window): I have a pretty good idea. We’re goanna have company in a few minutes. The syndicate is here.
Matthew (Weakly):I didn’t even have the nerve to do it face to face. I’m a coward. You are the hero and that’s all I ever wanted to become. But a true hero knows how to walk away. We were kidding ourselves thinking by killing the bad people, the gangs, and the syndicate that it would rid the slums of evil. But the truth is…..
The camera cuts to the elevator. It is packed to brim with thugs. They begin to prepare their ammo. Taking out guns and loading clips into them.
Matthew: We just learned a new form of evil.
Matthew looks in bad shape. He is struggling to stay alive. James looks on has a spectator.
Sebastian: We we’re young back then….
Matthew bleeds from cuts to his legs and blows on his face. Sebastian kneels down to him and kisses him on his forehead. He tells Anastasia to bring him to the back room where Jordan is.
Sebastian: James right?
James: Yes….
Sebastian: I think I’m going to need your help
Anastasia returns to the living room and walks over to Sebastian who is opening a closet. He pulls down a box fueled with an array of guns. He throws the box in the middle of the room to Sam and James.
Anastasia: What are you doing? I thought you said you weren’t going to kill anymore!
Sebastian dismisses her and loads up his guns.
A beat.
The elevator doors open and the thugs all pour out into the lobby and make their way to Anastasia’s apartment house. They huddle around the door.
A beat.
Inside the house. Sebastian, James, and Sam are loaded up and ready to ignite the war.
The doors burst open. Four thugs firing automatic weapons enter the house to greet them. They destroy furniture, and religious statues. They fail to hit anyone. Sebastian turns and shoots one of them. James kneels and kills two of them. Unloading all the bullets in his clips into them. Sebastian sees this. A smile appears on his face. A friendship is born through blood.
The camera cuts to James. He pulls out an Uzi from the box of weapons. He kills the next round of thugs trying to enter the house. He throws an automatic weapon to Sebastian.
Anastasia(From another room, looking out the window): They just keep coming and coming.
Sebastian: It doesn’t matter. Let them keep coming. It’s there funeral.
They all await the next round of thugs.
Downstairs in the basement. Three white men in suits get out of a car. They are the TRIO who are in charge of the Syndicate. They order their army around.
Gotti (Screaming): Try and get into the house from the window. They will pay for the outrage shown against Barrett.
James suddenly looks at the windows.
James: We need to close them, now!
James goes to close one of the windows. A thug kicks him in the mouth and then flies into the room. He is killed quickly. James shuts the windows and others next to it.
Another push from the thugs to try and enter the house. They are all blown away.
Sebastian: We’ve got to draw them away from here. I don’t want Anastasia and Jordan to get hurt.
A barrage of bullets over his head. Sebastian runs to the doorway, firing at two thugs. He kills them.
James: The fire escape.
They go out through the one remaining open window. Down the fire escape. And into a dark alley. Surprise! Thugs appear coming there way. Quickly disposed of. They make there way down the narrow alleyway until they reach a corner.
Suddenly Sam goes down in an onslaught of bullets.
The camera cuts to Gotti. Blasting with both hands. Sebastian comes forward with his gun. Fires six times. Gotti is hit, falls back to the ground dead. Sebastian gives cover fire as James bends over Sam.
Sebastian: He is dead.
James: But he shouldn’t have died like this.
Sebastian: And you don’t either. You must take your revenge….now!!!
Sebastian reaches over the back of James and fires two shots at a thug advancing on them. The thug stumbles and hits his head on the garbage containers.
Sebastian grabs James and they turn the corner and run down the next alleyway. Sebastian suddenly comes to a stop and kicks open a barricaded door way. James follows him, gun box in hand. They begin to re-load behind a long wall.
James: What is this place
Sebastian: It was my secret hiding place when I was a young boy. I would hide up there (Pointing to the raft ways above them) to get away from it all. I know it’s the palaces you are used to on the “Other” sector.
James looks at him and then moves to the gun box. He takes out an AK-47. He cocks it.
Above them the birds begin to fly away in slow motion. They screech and clap. James raises his head in awe of them.
The camera cuts to a bedroom. Anastasia sits up with Jordan in a corner. Squirming at each sound of gunfire. The door opens, Matthew enters.
Anastasia: What do you want?
Matthew: Who is doing the shooting?
Anastasia doesn’t answer him. She holds Jordan tighter. Matthew walks over to her and grabs her by her hair.
Matthew: Who!
The camera cuts to the Abandoned School building. Sebastian and James are holding the thugs off at the entrance. The camera tracks to the top and we see thugs trying to enter through a hole in the roof. Bullets are heard around us.
Sebastian: Is those Sirens I hear?
James: I know you didn’t think I wasn’t going to call for back up?
Sebastian: Back up?
On the rooftop the thugs send a hail of bullets down. Sebastian and James run for new cover. James takes a bullet in his shoulder. He crawls under a statue. Sebastian fires straight up towards the heavens. Thugs take it from below and fall from the heavens down to Hell.
James: They’re coming in!
Sebastian: Cover me!
Sebastian runs and slides across the floor. Reloading his guns. He blows two at close blank range. He takes a hit in the leg himself. He screams out in agony. He limps on one leg back to James. He takes out two more at close range again.
James: Can you fight on one leg? I don’t want to arrest you while your hopping mad
Sebastian: I have before. Don’t worry about me. And who said you were going to arrest me?
They both smile at each other.
Sebastian reaches into the brown box and pulls out an explosive. More thugs pour into the room, firing as they go. James reaches in and pulls out a shotgun. Sebastian throws the explosive near the doorway into a ring of thugs. He shoots it. It EXPLODES in every direction. The explosion sends thugs flying through the air north, south, east, and west.
They struggle to get up. Covering each other. Sebastian in the front and James in the back. They continue to shoot and blast. Above them white doves spread their wings and fly gracefully in slow motion.
Outside the School Building. The two remaining members of the TRIO that lead the syndicate, Duchesse and Barino, walk with a pair of thugs. Barino carries a machine gun.
Duchesse: I don’t think we should risk it. I can hear the sires. The cops will be here in any moment and then we will be finished for good.
Barino: Fuck the police. This thing with the “System” ends here tonight!
In the middle of the abandoned school building. Sebastian and James stand in the middle. Firing at their enemies. Duchesse, Barino, and other thugs continue to return their fire.
Thug#1: Fuck this! I’m out of here.
Barino(Watching his men hightail it out of there): Cowards! Come back here!
In slow motion, Sebastian and James still with their back against each other, continue to shoot and kill the thugs who had enough heart to stay and fight. Barino enters the building in a fit of rage. He fires at them wildly.
One shot from both of them….
Takes him out….
A deafening Silence then occurs. Sebastian drops his guns. There are no more targets left to kill. Duchesse and the little few of his gang that survived and made a break for it. James still holds his gun tight. In the background we hear sires coming.
The camera dissolves to outside the school building. Sebastian and James stand by a car, talking to each other. A lone police car finally arrives on the scene.
James: Look, get out of here. Take Anastasia and leave the city. I don’t know how you are going accomplish that? I was told there are no exits from the slums out of the city and into the world.
Sebastian: There is always a way.
James: Wait….isn’t that Matthew
James P.O.V: Matthew pushing Anastasia and Jordan into a car. He gets in the drivers seat and takes off.
Sebastian: No!
Sebastian pushes James out of the way and gets in the car. He takes off after Matthew. James runs over and orders the officer to follow both of them.
James P.O.V: Sebastian seems to be losing control of his car and slides into damaged up old car. He recovers and continues on after Matthew. They ride into a secluded cliff area. Matthew stops and turns off the engine right next to the edge. He gets out holding Anastasia. Sebastian stops his car not so far away from him.
Matthew (Blood dripping from his mouth): Hold it right their Sebastian!
Down below them the ocean waves crash in slow motion. James gets out of his car, along with the other officer, and they both draw their guns. Matthew takes out a knife and holds to her throat.
Matthew(Shaking his head no-no): Your not going to let me die in vain. The people of the slums need you to carry on the fight. Don’t you see that? Our brothers in the System are going to need you to lead them.
James: There is no more System. The syndicate hit your safe house. All of them are dead.
Sebastian turns and looks at James. He takes a deep breath and looks at Matthew. He begins to plead with him.
Sebastian:….It’s over…..
A beat. Matthew takes a peek over the cliffs. It’s a long way down. He begins to back up closer to the edge.
Anastasia(Screaming her lungs out): Sebastian!
Jordan: Mother! Mother!
Sebastian accelerates towards Matthew as he continues to back up towards the edge of the cliff. Their eyes meet. Sebastian jumps in mid air, to catch Anastasia before Matthew takes them of the cliff and to the ground below. Sebastian and Matthew collide and Anastasia is freed. She falls to the ground along with a BOOK that comes out of Sebastian’s jacket pocket.
Sebastian and Matthew fall off the cliff, arms wrapped around each other….
They fall into the waters below…..
…..The ocean waves crash again…..
James suddenly falls to his knees. He drops his gun. Jordan slumps back against the seat. Anastasia inhales and then exhales a violent scream. All three faces appear on the screen at the same time. Each of them shows the same emotion. Pain and Sorrow.
Fade out
Fade in on sometime later
Jordan walks over to the edge of the cliff. He consoles his mother. He notices the book that fell out of Sebastian’s jacket pocket. The cover reads “Nowhere by Sebastian Cole”. Jordan opens the book and flips through a few pages.
Fade in
The yellow light from the cigarette lighter flickers on and off again through the blackness. The light shines and we see the outline of a man’s face. He reaches his hand above us and turns on a switch. A light is turned on. The camera pulls back as we recognize the abandoned school but now it is fixed up. The man smiles. He turns and walks into the school.
Sebastian V.O: What is a hero? Someone who performs brave deeds? Someone who posses noble qualities? Someone who performs admirable deeds? Someone who is famous? To define a hero is a like allowing our lives to be published for all to see? Through of choice to support our heroes speaks volumes about us.
The camera slowly begins to fade to black
Sebastian V.O: They reveal our individual values and commitment to preserve the good qualities that lack in the world around us. But why do wee need them, assuming they exist? How do we choose them? Or do they choose us? Does yesteryear’s hero still inspire today’s one? Are heroes still important in this word?
The camera fades to black
Sebastian V.O: Indeed, because I exist.
The End
