- In 1977, George Lucas exploded on the big screen with his mega-epic "STAR WARS". A non-stop action adventure in the tradition of the "Flash Gordon" space operas of the thirties. Dynamic special effects and Shakespearean drama, merged to mystify an audience thirsting for new excitement. Handsome and brave heroes, deliciously evil villains, and a mysterious "Force"; all came together in a tale as marvelous and enchanting as that of "Ulysses", or "King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table".
- Mesmerized, we waited three years for the second installment of the "STAR WARS" canon. (Actually, "Star Wars" is more correctly titled: "A New Hope: Episode IV". "The Empire Strikes Back" is episode V, and "Return of the Jedi" is episode VI. As of this writing, "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace", or "Episode I", is playing to SRO theaters nationwide.) "The Empire Strikes Back" brought us back into the fold, with a darker side of this galaxy, far, far away. The deep, rich characterizations began to take us captive, on a roller-coaster ride through the worlds touched by the Force.
- By 1983, when "Return of the Jedi" jumped onto our theater screens, we were positively salivating with anticipation. Just like Pavlov's dog, we would feel the shivers up and down our spines, whenever John Williams's unforgettable score began to sound its call to arms.
- The "STAR WARS" Trilogy is modern mythos. Lucas's opus is in every way, a fantasy tale for the 20th century. The same elements which made Homer's "ODYSSEY" the quintessence of adventure in ancient Greece, are widely found in Lucas's work.
- Some would argue that "STAR WARS" is science fiction. Although there are sci-fi elements in this tale, the prevalent focus is fantasy. Science Fiction requires a certain amount of reliability on accepted, or at least theorized premises, that may stretch one's credibility, but not "snap" it. Fantasy, on the other hand, is reliant only on the limits of the viewer's imagination.
