"Fantastic Film Forays"

  • The Human community has loved the world of fantasy since it's earliest origins. Even as Man first learned to speak, and communicate with his others, interpretive story-telling became his favorite gift. Whether exaggerating his heroic feats while hunting for food, or braying to his buddies about his physical attributes; Man has long been impressed with the art of fantasy. Tribal elders were expected to retain and relate their respective adventures, creating the seeds of early mythology.

    Joust a minute, please...

  • Unfortunately, as early historians related their "oral histories"; each "tale grew with the telling". Eventually, a mundane tale of hunting a deer, might become a heroic epic of a handsome stalwart rescuing a princess from a fire-breathing dragon!

    Leave me alone!

  • It might be argued that myth-telling, could be the very basis of everything creative within the human spirit. Even Mankind's preoccupation with religion has it's roots in the oral-tradition. (There is nothing inherently wrong with this, as long as the individual recognizes the difference between reality and fantasy.)

    Nudge, nudge,...wink, wink...

  • Throughout Man's troubled history, myth-making has given him solace, knowledge, and entertainment. Who amongst us can deny the influence of Aesop, Homer, the Brothers Grimm, J.R.R. Tolkein, Gene Roddenberry, or George Lucas? From our infancy, we are constantly told tales of fancy. Most are meant to thrill, instruct, or placate us; but others haved awed us with their poignancy and scope.

    BEEP! BEEP!

  • We are an inquisitive species, and our search for knowledge has evolved into an explorative nature. Perhaps that is why, our favorite tales are those of the Quest. From Jason & the Argonauts...to King Arthur & the Knights of the Round Table;...from Alan Quartermain...to Indiana Jones;...from Pinnochio...to Luke Skywalker. The quest always calls for heroism, and a journey through diversity, finally ending with the discovery of the treasure. A treasure which is always in reality,...one's inner self.

  • Fantasy has evolved throughout the ages, and has reflected the technology of the day. Interpretations of "inexplicia", are expectedly, restricted to existing knowledge. Hence, Unidentified Flying Objects have been labeled alternatively as: "flying, fiery chariots", "giant dirigibles", & "alien-piloted space craft".

    Nikto baradas klaatu!

  • Fortunately, we have had the storytellers to keep the tales alive. Even more so today, when our mysteries are explained every day, as mundane and humdrum. Though we seek the truth, and revere its necessity; who amongst us does not crave the magic of fantasy!

  • We are entering the 21st Century, and Fantasy has never had such an opportunity, and an audience. How lucky we are to experience the greatest tales of mankind through modern filmmaking. No longer do we sit around the campfire with our clan, munching on bone marrow, picking at our loved one's nits, enthralled by the wonder of a master storyteller....Or do we, hmmm?

  • I welcome you to join me on a short journey through some of Hollywood's best, (...and worst!), "campfire tales". So turn down the lights, find a comfortable seat, and enjoy. You'll have to find your own bone marrow,...and your own clan!
