PocketStation News

So what is Sony's new "PocketStation" device? It was released in Japanese on 12/23/98 with a price of 3,000 yen, which is about US$25 (Sounds very reasonable!). After its release in Japan, it had sold out very quickly, within a few weeks. It seems there was, and may still be, a major shortage of these units in Japan. Lets just hope this doesn't happen when it is released in the states!

This is how fast the PocketStation sold out in Japan- Gamers eager to get their hands on the new Sony handheld headed to stores up in the early hours of the handheld's release, on a Saturday morning waiting for them to open. Many arrived in the afternoon, only to be disappointed. Retailers have said there is no firm schedule from Sony as to when they can expect more supplies. It is one of the hottest electronic items in Japan right now, so think of how cool it will be when it hits the states.

Mini-Games and small applications for the device can be downloaded from the PlayStation through the memory slots, and gamers will be able to utilize time of year and seasons in devices based on the PocketStation's calendar function. Some cool ideas are to have special date cheats that would only activate on specific days of the year, and to allow gamers to exchange items in different games (I.E. trading cars in a racing game, characters in an rpg, players in a sports game).
