Sitting here, I am listening to the 12-year-old upstairs run up and down the stairs. This house was not built for two families, so there are no sound barriers between us and them. That is usually not a problem; the upstairs family is very quiet. They have been the perfect tenants; rent paid early every month, no loud music or parties, pleasant to be around, not in your face every minute. The Girl plays a couple instruments, so sometimes when it's very quiet down here I can hear her practicing. But that's about it.
But today, for some reason (cabin fever?) The Girl has been quite noisy. At first, I was a teensy bit annoyed; but I got used to it quickly and have enjoyed the sound of a child, even one slamming doors and clumping up the stairs. And I've been thinking about the children who are in my life right now.
Mr. and Mrs. Priest's 2-year old is delightful. She graces our Altar Guild meetings, pirouettes around our adult bible study class, zooms in and out of the kitchen during coffee hour, and generally makes life interesting. She is joined by the baby-who-almost-didn't-make-it last year, and who is now walking all over the undercroft. When Meg plays the piano, he totters over to investigate.
We had a new 2-year old today; a little boy who led his dad a merry chase, up and down the ramp, in and out of the library, through the legs of the adults enjoying their coffee. The nursery is bursting at the seams. Today one of the teens who helps the caregiver didn't come to church, so one of our young men whose children are now middle school and up, stayed to help her out. She said later that the children loved having him to play with. He looked a little dazed...or crazed.
At the Peace, the parents go down to the nursery to retrieve their babies for the Eucharist, and we are treated to sounds of little ones making their own music during the prayers. How lucky we are to have this baby-boomlet! I think it keeps everybody young at heart. Some of the smiles I see on faces these days haven't seen the light of day for years.
And last night, DB and I joined Lyra and Jackson at a quick supper, then the b-ball game. They were playing at a high school close to us, so it was an easy drive for us; not so easy for Lyra and hubby. The games were exciting, and I enjoyed them, but primarily I went to see Lydia and the cheerleaders. Lydia is such a graceful and grace-full child. She has a radiant smile when she is cheering. It was a good evening.
DB and I stayed out until about 9:30 both Friday and Saturday nights! This is some kind of a record. This fast-paced social life is tiring me out!

Tomorrow is another day off; that's the benefit of working for a federally funded program. And am I prepared! I have new 3-ring binders in which to organize my papers, two new file boxes to store all these binders, sewing at-the-ready, and DB's pants are in the washer so that tomorrow I can get them all pressed for the week. I'm feeling virtuous. The reality is that all this preparation means absolutely nothing. I "get prepared" often, and still nothing gets done. Now that I've confessed this publicly, I hope I'll be too embarrassed to procrastinate.
