WHITESTONE‘s legend has it that Whitestone got its name from a big white rock off shore where the tides from he East River and Long Island Sound meet. The first settlers arrived about 1645 and built scattered farmsteads. An old fort built in the French and Indian War and rebuilt by the British formerly stood at the foot of 160th Street. For a brief time the hamlet bore the name Clintonville, but in 1854 it reverted to Whitestone. Later, wealthy New Yorkers began to build mansions along the shore. In 1906, Beechhurst was developed and quickly attracted theater and screen personalities. Today Whitestone is a prime residential community.
