“Night Flyer: Part 1”

By: Faita

A girl walked slowly down the Gotham City street holing a book to her chest. Her short black hair bounced around her chin. A boy ran up behind her, his short black hair and gray jacket moved as he ran.

“Nell! Nell!” he yelled after her. She stopped walking and turned around to see him. He ran over to her and began to breath heavily when her stopped running in front of her.

“Well hi Blue Eye,” she said smiling, he laughed.

“Don’t forget the other one,” he said.

“Sorry, hi brown eye,” she then said. He was well known on campus for having one blue and one brown eye.

“Nell, I’ve been running after you for two blocks, where are you going to?” he asked her.

“The museum David, ever heard of it?” she asked him turning back around and beginning to walk again, he walked next to her.

“Why are you going there?” David asked her.

“I like to learn things,” she said to him in a high pitched voice. He grinned.

“Oh is that all? I thought maybe you meet someone, like a guy or something,” he said grinning.

“No Blue Eye, that’s why you go to the museum,” she said.

“I don’t go to museums, you’re the brains of this operation baby,” he said with a mobster voice. She laughed. They heard an evil laughter coming from behind them, then stopped walking and turned around. They saw five Jokerz standing there, grinning at them.

“That was kinda funny Davy, you should be a comic,” the leader said. David’s face became angry as he readied himself to fight, Nell set her book on the ground and just stood next to David, and angry expression on her face too.

“What do you want?” David asked them seriously. They laughed.

“Can’t some guys come by and see an old friend?” the leader asked him.

“He’s no friend of yours,” Nell told the Jokerz. The Jokerz grinned at her, some of them little slightly. David gave her a surprised look. He had never really seen her like this, she had always been just the smart quiet friend he had that tried her best to keep him out of trouble, now she looked like she was going to attack them and rip their faces off. He had told her about his past, about how three years before they had meet, which was about two years ago, when his parents were killed in a fire, that he had joined the Jokerz. He had developed a reputation, but he left after less then a year, which gave him another reputation, it wasn’t a good one, but he was proud of it anyway. The Jokerz have been trying to recruit him again ever since. Nell was the only person who wanted to be his friend, he scared everyone else. He guessed she took the role seriously, like she was now. The lead Joker walked over to her.

“And who might you be my pretty?” he asked holding her chin in his glove. She grabbed his wrist.

“I’m his friend,” she told him narrowing her eyes.

“Nell don’t,” David told her, though he did kinda want to see what she would do. The Joker looked at him then grinned at her, he didn’t seem to care that she had a firm hold on his wrist.

“Nell is it? What a lovely name,” he said. David kicked him in his stomach with his left leg. The Joker flew in the air, after Nell let go of his wrist, and into the rest of the Jokerz. They all fell to the ground with a painful crash. David didn’t have time to feel good about his attack before he felt a fist hit him in the shoulder. He heard Nell scream as he fell to his knees in pain and as he felt a kick in his stomach and he fell on to his back. He saw another Joker that wasn’t there before step into his view, laughing at him. He could hear him laughing, only see his mouth moving. He stepped out of David’s view and joined the rest of the Jokerz. He could smell the exhaust as they all got onto their bikes and ride off, laughing so loudly he could hear them. He saw Nell’s face in front of him, a worried expression on her face. He smiled at her, at least he thought he did, he wasn’t to sure. He must have because she smiled back at him and helped him to his feet.

“How do you feel?” she asked him as she placed one of his arms around her shoulder and wrapped her arm around his waist. She held her book in her other arm. “How do I look?” he asked her.

“Let’s get you to that museum Blue Eye,” she said as they made their way slowly towards to the museum.

The two of them walked slowly into the museum, David was hung around her shoulder. They walked over to the front desk that lay in the middle of the giant stone library. The man behind the desk quickly stood up and walked around the side of the desk. He helped Nell carry David to the closest bench. They set David down carefully with his back against the marble wall behind him.

“What happened to him?” the man asked Nell.

“I tripped on the sidewalk,” David answered him painfully. The man looked at him in disbelief.

“We were attacked by the Jokerz, they beat the crap out of him,” Nell told him. His eyes narrowed and his teeth grit.

“Do you want me to call the hospital?” he asked her.

“She will, but I don’t. I’ve been there enough,” David told him.

“I take it you’ve lost a lot of fights,” the man said.

“I’ve won more then I’ve lost,” David told him.

“I’m Nell Robie, and this is David Ross,” Nell told the man.

“Terry McGinnis. I’m a new employee here at the museum,” he told her.

“I bet this is the most exciting thing you’ve seen in a long time,” David said to him.

“You’d be surprised,” Terry said.

“Are you sure you don’t need help Blue Eye?” Nell asked him. Terry looked at her confused.

“She sometimes calls me Blue Eye because I have one blue eye and one brown eye, no doubt you’ve noticed,” David said to him.

“Looks like you have a black eye too,” Nell told him.

“I’m sure you have friends who call you things other then your real name Terry,” David said. Terry smiled.

“You’d be surprised,” Terry said still smiling.

“I think I’ll just sit here till you’re done with what you need to do Nell,” David told her. She frowned.

“It’s not that important David, if you want to go back to your dorm I can take you, I can do this later,” Nell told him.

“Actually I think I need this rest for a moment, you do what you need to and I’ll just sit here,” David said. Nell frowned again, then she turned to Terry.

“You’ll keep an eye on him,” she told him.

“Nell I can take care of myself,” David told her.

“Tell that to your health. You’ll keep an eye on him,” she said still looking at Terry, basically ignoring David and demanding Terry. Terry nodded. Nell smiled at him graciously, then at David.

“See ya in a bit Blue Eye,” she said and picked up her book and began to walk farther into the museum. David sighed.

“Do you have a girlfriend Terry?” he asked him.

“I have a girl that's a friend,” Terry said. David smirked.

“Not many guys can handle that, Nell and I can. Does your friend ever seem...” he said but trailed off, not knowing the correct word.

“All the time,” Terry answered him.
