Chapter Fourteen

Rainforest, Brazil

Race landed the helicopter in the clearing with ease. Next to him, Hadji held on to his turban as the whirring blades threatened to blow it off his head. Dr. Quest had decided to stay behind in case they heard anything new about Jonny and Jessie. They had received coordinates from a military satellite that had recorded a plane going down and it was the only lead they had so they took it. Benton was hoping for something more concrete, not wanting to hope for anything more than that.

Hadji's hand reached for the radio as he spotted the small crashed plane.

"No, Hadj," Race said. "Just git down there and see if they're anyplace around. I'll shut this bird down and join you in a second."

"As you say, Race."

Hadji took his headset off and headed towards the crashed plane. He hopped onto the wing and looked into the window. His eyes widened as a scene he had not every intended to witness met his eyes. Weakly, he rapped on the window.

"Did you find them, Hadj?" Race yelled as he made his way towards him.

"Uh..yes…yes, I did." He turned and yelled in a hurry, "Stay right there, Race! Er…I think I saw a fire burning over there." He pointed back towards the helicopter.

Race gave him a strange look. "Something the matter, Hadji?"

"Not at all."

The older man nodded and jogged off towards the said fire. Hadji released a sigh of relief and turned back to tapping in the window. Inside, his two friends began to stir. The window may have been dirty, but he could make out the two figures intertwined. His hand shook as he imagined what Race would have done had he found them. He could see Jonny get up and shake Jessie.

"Alright, son. What's going on here?" Race's voice said behind him.

Hadji let out a yell and nearly fell over had Race not grabbed a hold of him.

"Nothing at all."

"Are they both in there?"

"Yes."

"Hadji!" the occupants of the plane cried in unison.

"DAD!"

Jessie crawled forward and opened the door. She threw her arms around her father.

"Jess…" Jonny began uncomfortably.

"What?"

Race looked at the boy and was surprised to see his face a flaming red. He pulled Jessie away from his slightly and found his little Ponchita half-naked and dressed in only Jonny's shirt and her underwear.

"Jessica," he began. "I think you should put some clothes on, Sweetheart."

Jessie laughed and pulled the shirt down around her knees. "Sorry. Didn't mean to offend anyone."

"No offense here," Jonny remarked.

Race glared at him. Hadji smiled. If Jonny wanted to live, he should try to get into Race's good graces before the man hears the news.

Jonny got out and allowed Jessie some privacy.

"You alright, Kid?" Race asked. "Your Dad's been worried sick."

"We're fine," Jonny replied. "Bernard is dead. Self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. I had to drag him over there so we could use the plane for the night."

Race looked in the direction he pointed. "Must have been some fire you saw, Hadji."

"It was his soul leaving his body," Hadji said.

Jessie jumped out of the plane with her pants on, but with Jonny's shirt still on. It smelled like him.

"I'm ready to go," she cried, unconsciously moving next to Jonny.

"Well, let's go then," Race said.

They got into the helicopter and flew to the airport where the Quest Jet was waiting.

Quest Compound, Maine

Race and Benton sat in the sunny kitchen, sipping their coffee as if nothing had happened the day before. For them, it was all part of the job. Benton was looking better, not as haunted or pale now that his son was well again. Race was a little jumpier. He had a feeling something was up and he didn't like it.

Jessie made her way down, a suitcase in her hand. She put it down in the hallway and smiled a starburst of a smile at them. Benton threw Race an amused glance, but it seemed to go over his head.

"Sleep well, Jess?" Race asked.

She kissed his cheek and didn't appear to notice his dark mood. "I slept great, Dad."

"Then what was all that sneakin' around about in the middle of the night?"

Jessie stopped in her tracks. She knew enough about her father to know that she wouldn't be able to lie and get away with it. In truth, she had snuck into Jonny's room and slept with him. Just slept of course, but she wanted to feel his arms around her as she slept. Not that her father would enjoy that explanation more than if she had actually slept with him.

"Just thought I would make sure I was still home, Dad," she replied and left the room before he could ask her more questions.

Race looked desperately at Benton. "I don't like this one bit. You saw them when they came back. Something is up."

"Yes, I did. Honestly, Race, Jessie was about to fall in love sooner or later and who better with than my son?"

Race glared into his coffee cup. "She's too young to fall in love."

"She's a woman now, Race," Benton said as gently as he could. "She's not too young for anything anymore."

His friend leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. "Only because it's Jonny, Benton. But I make no promises."

Benton hid his smile behind his coffee mug.

In the foyer, Jessie opened the door just as Jonny put his key in the look. She greeted him with a big grin.

"Hi."

He looked around them to make sure no one was around to see before throwing his arms around her and giving her a big kiss.

"Hi," he replied when they broke apart.

"Is that you, Jonny?" Dr. Quest said from the kitchen.

"Yeah, Dad."

Race and Benton emerged from the kitchen to see them off. Jonny discretely let her go. The move wasn't lost on their fathers. Jonny's knees threatened to give way when Race pinned him with a black look.

"We're, uh, just getting ready to go," he said, lifting her suitcase from the floor.

"That's a mighty light back you packed, Jessica," Race admonished, his hands on his hips.

Benton covered his mouth.

"We're going to Hawaii, Dad. I didn't need to pack heavy things," Jessie explained patiently.

Jonny forced himself not to run out of the house. The foursome made their way outside to the landing pad. Jessie frowned when she saw Jonny's plane.

"Why is it Jonny's Dream II?" she asked.

Behind them, Race smacked his forehead and rolled his eyes. Benton chuckled.

"You have to give him credit, Race. He's not doing too bad," he said.

"I can't take it. I'm going to tear him apart limb from limb," Race growled.

"But he's my only son!" Benton mock protested. "Besides, he probably got the idea from you."

"Don't try to pin this one on me, Benton."

Race cracked his knuckles. He wasn't as young as he used to be and Jonny was not a scrawny boy any longer, but Race was certain he could still mash him into nothing.

Unaware that his life was in danger once again, Jonny replied to Jessie's question with a mysterious, "I'll tell you when we're in the air."

Jessie grinned in excitement. They said a quick good-bye to their fathers, Race holding on to his daughter longer than necessary, Jonny walking on eggshells around Race, and finally they made it to the plane. Jessie waved one last time to her father, who was looking forlornly at her. Next to him, Benton was grinning as if he knew the world's funniest joke.

They took off and after a few minutes Jonny turned to her and held out a small velvet box. She felt one moment's fear before she reached for it. He put the plane on autopilot as he watched her take it.

"It's not what you think," he laughed.

She opened it and found a small silver heart pendant on a silver chain. She picked it up and saw the delicate twined vines bordering the heart. It was exquisite.

"Look at the back," Jonny said softly.

To Jonny's Dream, it read.

She looked at him.

I love you. JQ.

"Oh, Jonny," she breathed. She held it out. "Will you help me?"

She turned and lifted her hair. He fastened the chain around her neck and pressed a kiss to the nape.

"What do you think?" he asked.

He looked terrified. Jessie's heart soared. He was afraid she didn't love him back. She'd never seen him look as scared as he did at that moment and was touched. Of all the things Jonny Quest was afraid of, it was she.

"I think," she began. "I think I need to hear it out loud."

He leaned in closer to her until their noses touched.

"I love you, Jessica Maria Bannon."

"I love you, too, Jonathan Benton Quest," she replied in a low voice. "Theirs is no doubt about it. You're mine."

He grinned. "Good."

They lips met and the plane flew all the way to Hawaii without their help.
