---The Early History--- Qrown started off as a Christian band back in
1990 with the name 'The Ambassadors'. Winston had plans of forming a Christian
band at that time, and he talked Jason Schwartz (ex-bassist) into forming a
band with him. Soon after, they both roped Darren Chang (former keyboardist)
into the band and started off as a trio. With Winston initially taking
his throne behind the drums, they did an instrumental track in the FGAYF's
1990 Talentime, but were unsucessful in their attempt.
In early 1991, an understrength trio decided to recruit two other members
into the group. One was a lanky 14-year old who couldn't play guitar properly,
but the Ambassadors decided to take their chances. The other was a 13-year old
with no prior performing experience. At that time, the song Time (is Coming
to an End) had already been written by Jason and Win, and they decided to play
this original composition, but it couldn't come at a worse time than 1991.
After a few rejections, Darren had to bring us back to the instrumental
beginning and wrote Legacy to get better response within the circle. During
that time, the band comprise of Darren (keyboards), Jason (bass), Stefan
(guitars), Keng (guitars) and Winston (drums).
In end 1991, Jason opted out of the Ambassadors as he had missions and ministry
obligations to fulfill. They had lost a bassist of calibre and were out to
make a changes in personnel and the hunt for a bassist soon began. At this
juncture, the search for a vocalist was also felt by the Ambassadors
as changes were being made for the transition from an instrumental band to a
full-forced rock band. The band decided to take turns in singing duties, but
nonetheless, a permanent vocalist was much desired. At this time, the band is:
Winston (drums), Keng and Stef (guitars) and Darren (keyboards).
Before long, Steven was recruited and he soon took his place in the band as
a drummer, while original drummer moved to bass playing. A formidable band is
once again on course. A vocalist was still very much needed. In mid-1993, Darren
made a shocking decision by announcing his retirement from the band. Just days
after the band called on a good friend and potential Youth leader, Stephen to
join the band. He then, filled the shoes of the vocalist. The band, without
a keyboard player was on course once again. This time, they were ready to go
as the long-awaited vocalist had arrived. The rest.... well, they're history.
Until end-1995, the band was Winston (drums again!), Steven (bass), Stephen (the
voice), Stef and Keng (guitars). Then, a change of positions were much needed
to improve..... so the final line-up features; Winston (voice), Stefan (guitars),
Keng (guitars), Stephen (bass) and Steven (drums).
The Ambassadors came to be known as Qrown only in 1997, in a coffee shop.
It was originally decided to be known as Crown, but some 'wise' guy in the band
(guess who?) decided to call it with the Q to make it more unique.
The rest is history....
