When the Cat's Away (1996).....Director: Cedric Klapisch........Starring: Garance Clabel, Zinedine Soualem
This delightful French film from 1997 is about a young Parisian woman named Chloé (Garance Clabel) who is searching for her lost cat, Gris-Gris. Her search leads her on a voyage through her shabby, bohemian Paris neighborhoodChloe's life is hardly thrilling, and romance has proven elusive, so when her cat disappears while she's away on a brief vacation, it's a minor crisis that reminds Chloé of just how lonely she is, and her exhaustive search for the cat begins. Like the films of Eric Rohmer, this film is filled with casual observation and quiet revelations of character.

Thieves (1996) ....Director: Andre Techine.....Starring: Catherine Deneuve, Daniel Auteuil, Fabien Babe, Laurence Côté
Catherine Deneuve, Daniel Auteuil, and director André Téchiné collaborate for the
second time (following their outstanding My Favorite Season). in a powerful story
about a Paris cop (Auteuil) who comes from a criminal family. When his father and
brother are murdered, suspicion shifts to his lover (actress Laurence Côté), who then
disappears. Auteuil's character reluctantly teams up with her lesbian girlfriend (Catherine Deneuve) both to find her and clear her name.
In Les Voleurs, he reunites his favourite duo of Deneuve and Auteuil - she is not playing his sister as in Ma saison préférée, but his sister in-love. Yet it is Laurence Cote's performance that may well steal the show.

Rosetta (1999)
I saw the film as my last in the 1999 Cannes Film Festival, but it is not the only
reason why i remember it so well. The first impressions I had during the screening
were rather strange : the shoulder-lifted camera, very close to the characters, made
me a little sea-sick ,and i couldn't figure clearly where the Dardenne brothers were
going to lead us. And, slowly the story of Rosetta, the young girl that desperately
looks for work, gets bigger and will never get down again. It's a treason that starts
the dramatical side of the story, and from then on, the cinema of the Dardenne can
handle perfectly the multiples scenes of moral tension, until the unforgettable,
moving last sequence. The directors said that their film was "a war film": if a bit
pretentious, nothing is more true than this assumption.

The story of three sisters in French Colonial Algeria during the 1950s and how their lives of ease and privilege are irrevocably changed by the onset of the Franco-Algerian War. The stunning award-winning story of how three beautiful sisters handle their man troubles. Winner of Best Film (Critics' Week) at Cannes 1990; Best Actress for Nicole Garcia, Marianne Basler and Brigitte Rouan at Valence 1990. Directing debut for French actress Brigitte Rouan. Many of the events in "Overseas" are based on Rouan's family history, including her father's disappearance while fighting in Algeria.

Un héros très discret (1996)
A Self Made Hero (1997)....Director: Jacques Audiard.......Starring: Mathieu Kassovitz, Anouk Grinberg
After the liberation of France, a salesman with a proclivity for fibbing begins his life anew with a fully fabricated identity--that of a daring Resistance hero, based on library research and the war yarns of an old Army captain. But his performance so captivates the French upper crust that he's soon way over his head--and holding a key ambassadorial position. A delicious piece of work...smart and provocative.
Mon homme (1996)
My Man (1996).....Director: Bertrand Blier........Starring: Anouk Grinberg, Gerard Lanvin......Gleefully amoral sex fable about a sweet-natured, nymphomaniac prostitute (Grinberg) and what happens when she falls in love with Jeannot, an aggressive homeless panhandler who agrees to be Marie's pimp and lover but soon finds himself bloated with power. Full of typically perverse and surreal Blier touches, but also surprisingly affecting. A provocative and putatively humorous treatise on sex and control, in the vein of Blier's "Too Beautiful for You" and "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs."
