A truly impressive French film destined to become a modern masterpiece, Jean de Florette is an evocative adaptation of the highly regarded French novel. The story takes place in Provence. Two 1920's farmers engage in a bitter rivalry as one tries to tend to a plot of land and the other deviously undermines his efforts in order to conceal a valuable spring. The peasant farmer (Gérard Depardieu) who comes to the countryside to tend the land he has inherited is a naive and trusting soul seeking only to provide for his wife and daughter, while his neighbor (Yves Montand) is intent on doing whatever he can to discourage and demoralize the farmer so that he can take the land for himself. This simple tale unfolds in a wrenching fashion to a tragic conclusion, bringing forth questions about human nature and the prevalence and price of greed. Richly textured, emotionally powerful adaptation of MarcelPagnol novel, exquisitely and meticulously filmed, with galvanizing performances--especially by Depardieu as the doggedly optimistic novice farmerAlong with its follow-up, Manon of the Spring, this film will leave an indelible impression on anyone who sees it.

BELMONDO, Jean-Paul

Jean-Paul Belmondo biography: Born April 9, 1933 as the son of a sculptor, Jean-Paul Belmondo briefly attended the Paris Conservatoire before inaugurating his acting career with various provincial theatrical productions. In 1956, Belmondo and another star-to-be, Alain Delon, made their joint screen debut as juvenile delinquents in Sois Belle et Tais-Toi. Belmondo then burst onto the nouvelle vague scene in 1959 with his portrayal of Bogart-loving petty thief Michel in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless.

Hailed as the logical successor of such previous Gallic anti-heroes as Michel Simon and Jean Gabin, Belmondo spent the early 1960s playing charismatic, self-destructive lowlifes in such films as Pierrot la Fou (1965). Immensely popular in his own country, Belmondo was elected president of France's actors union in 1963, the same year that he wrote his autobiography 30 Years and 25 Films. Upon altering his image to that of a man of action in Phillipe DeBroca's internationally successful L'Homme de Rio (1964), Belmondo allowed the rest of his career to be defined along more box-office-savvy lines than was previously the case. Maintaining his own production company, Cerito Films, Belmondo occasionally returned to the anti-establishment characterizations that first brought him fame, but tended to rely upon "safe," bankable material for the most part. In 1995, after several years away from films, Jean-Paul Belmondo scored a critical success as Henri Fortin/Jean Valjean in a modern-dress adaptation of Les Miserables. In 1998, he was reunited with his old co-star Alain Delon in Une Chance sur Deux, or Half a Chance.

À bout de souffle
Breathless (1960)....Starring: Belmondo, Seberg
Leon Morin, Priest ...(1961).......Director: Jean-Pierre Melville
Belmondo gives subdued, offbeat performance as clergyman trying to set shady woman onto the path of righteousness.
Cartouche ....(1963).....Director: Phillippe De Broca
Colorful, exciting exploits of 18th-century Cartouche, who takes over a Parisian crime syndicate. Belmondo is dashing as Cartouche and Cardinale is ravishing as Venus, his gypsy-mistress. Based on French legendary Robin Hood.
La Chasse à l'homme ......(Male Hunt) Edouard Molinaro, 1964. With Catherine Deneuve, Françoise Dorléac, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean-Claude Brialy. A comedic battle of the sexes with an all-star cast, highlighted by Deneuve and her real-life sister, Dorléac; the men in the film try their madcap best to avoid marriage, but find themselves overpowered by feminine wiles.
Pierrot Le Fou ...(1965)....Director: Jean-Luc Godard
Belmondo and Karina run away together to the South of France. Complex, confusing, but engrossing drama, which exudes an intriguing sense of spontaneity. Allegedly shot without a script.

Bourvil Biography

aka: André Raimbourg...1917 - 1970
French actor/singer Bourvil (his professional name taken from the Bourville district of his native Normandy) was musically inclined from his youth, when he played trumpet in a municipal band. Developing his singing while in military service, Bourvil first stepped on stage in 1937 as an amateur entertainer, using the stage name "Andrel." By 1938 he had become a fixture of the French music halls with his signature song, "Ignace," and at the time of the Nazi occupation Bourvil was an established radio performer. Though popular, it took Bourvil a while to develop his own style and stop imitating his idol, Gallic comedian Fernandel. Bourvil made his screen debut in a tiny part in Croisieres siderales (1941), but officially his first film was La Ferme du Pendu, filmed in 1943 and released outside France in 1945. An established comic performer, Bourvil did more stage than film work in the 1950s, though he was memorable as Planchet in the 1953 French Three Musketeers,- and, less lovably, as the nasty innkeeper in the 1956 version of Les Miserables. Comparatively unknown to American audiences, Bourvil was given a wonderful moment in the Hollywood-financed war epic The Longest Day (1962), in which as the Mayor of Colleville he effusively greets the invading allied troops at Normandy and offers his negligible services as a soldier. The last of Bourvil's English-language appearances was in another all-star spectacular, Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies (1969). --Hal Erickson
