do you like music? i do!

music in our lives is a class taught in my school, atleast i think it is. anyhoo, this is the tale of my growth with music.

la la la la la. its me in 2nd grade, bouncing curls (or should i say bouncing fro) going home from school. its my birthday today, and im having a paaaaartay. woo hoo. what does this have to do with music? everything. on my birthday, in 2nd grade, i received my first walkman, with 4 tapes to listen to. it was a crappy walkman, from the late 70's early 80's, that my dad passed on to me. the tapes were old too, i guess. one of them was billy idol "charmed life", and the other 3 were mix tapes that my dad recorded himself. on them were songs from deep purple, rolling stones, ac/dc, led zep, black sabbath, and some blues/jazz artists that i still dont know who they are. i always fast forward when it comes up to those guys :). my dad told me if i ever lost those tapes, he'd kill me. i "misplaced" them for a few years...but alas they are alive n kicking, in the tape player of the family car. the likes of black sabbath is not what you would normally give a 2nd grade girl to listen to eh?

well, im sorry to disappoint you but no way in hell did i grow up listening to the soundtrack of snow white and the little mermaid, or something. this is the music that i was first introduced to. i never really listened to any other music besides what was on those tapes and the classic rock station that was always playing in the car. you may disagree with me on this, but i think classic rock and music from the 60's n 70's in general is the best music to ever be made, and will always be. yes i know that the lyrics back then didn't have that much meaning, but to tell you the truth im not much of a lyrics girl. sure i pay attention to it, but i appreciate the sound the instruments make more than the words coming out of the singers mouth. also, just a lil tidbit i thought i'd add, the song "tambourine man" was really about a drug dealer and they were asking him for drugs. "hey mr tambourine man, play a song for me." (bet ya didnt know that huh huh?)

i didn't start listening to other music until i was in the 5th or 6th grade. the people i hung out with introduced me to rap and the world's of white zombie and nirvana. i remember listening to kris kros (hahahaha), house of pain (groan) and cypress hill (double groan). at the same time i was listening to more human than human (that songs kick ass) and rape me (please do not ask a really ugly boy to sing that, ok?). it doesnt make much sense in me listening to 2 totally different worlds, right? i never said i was normal.

even though i listened to this music, i never bought any cd's or tapes. i was still stuck on oldies. however, in a year rap became my big thing. i slowly drifted from zee oldies (besides when i was in the car with my pops) and started gettin jiggy wit it. i still didnt really buy any cd's, but i bought singles of songs i liked and i taped from the radio. it wasnt my proudest moments as a music listener.

about 3 years ago, i started going back to my roots. i also started paying attention to more and more modern rock stuff. pretty much this is where i am at now.

in about 3 years i have succeeded in being crazy enough to buy about 50 cd's. i try not to buy too much because i only want to get the good stuff. i dont want to own 200 cd's and only listen to like 3 of them, ya know? i pretty much listen to all kinds of music now, but my main things are classic rock and 90's rock.

although i listen to 90's rock, i dont own that many 90's rock cd's. to me, there's only a few "special" groups in this era, and the rest are just cheap ripoffs. yes i do listen to such groups as our lady peace, girls against boys, black lab etc etc, but i dont own any of their cd's. i have a few 90's cds. the most i have are from nirvana and smashing pumpkins. without a doubt nirvana is my favorite group from the 90's. unlike some people (gives the evil eye to sasha) i happen to think cobain was a great guitarist and i like grohl better on drums. i dont idolize cobain or anything, i just like his music very much and its too bad he is no longer.

as for classic rock and oldies, i love this music soooo much and it sucks that i cant have all the cds from the bands i love and semi love. most of my classic rock cd's are just best of compilations. it would be crazy to try and get a lot of bands cd's from back then because unlike groups in the 90's, they did not milk one cd for 4 years (ahem alanis morisette ahem). for instance, the beatles had what...13 cd's or something like that? anyway...my fav bands from the 60's and 70's are the beatles, deep purple, and led zep.

i guess thats my history with music. right now the cd's most played on my cd player are the new lauryn hill and led zep physical graffiti disc 2.

a list of all my cd's for you folks interested
