The Goodrich Web Page

Jonathan Goodrich, b. October 6, 1812 and Jane Utley, b. September 10, 1817 were married in Pawlet, Vermont on June 29, 1834. Jonathan Horace Goodrich was the son of Jonathan Horace and Hester Stearns Goodrich. Jane Utley was the daughter of Capt. Leonard and Phidelia Hanks Utley. I am currently researching these lines. I know that Jane Utley is descended from Gov. William Bradford->William Bradford->Alice Bradford Adams & Major James Fitch->Daniel Fitch & Anna Cook->William Fitch & Mary Paine->Mary Fitch & Jacob Perkins-> Lucy Perkins & Arumah Hanks. At the present time, I know very little about the Goodrich's. I believe that they lived in Whitehall, NY for a time.

After their marriage they came to New York State, coming by Ox team. At night they burned flares to keep the wolves away. This country was new. Mr. Goodrich worked logging, 10 to 12 hours a day. He earned $1.00 per day. They settled in Buffalo for a short time. Then came to East Otto, NY and lived in a house on what is now the Howard Ebel farm. (Snake Run Road) The house was across the creek from the present house on the same side of the road as the present house. They had 19 children, of which they raised 18.

They raised a granddaughter, Edith Colvin, after her father passed away. One son was starved to death in Andersonville Prison during the Civil War. Another son was shot, but lived carrying the bullet several years. Later it festered and the bullet came out. As near as can be traced, it was Alonzo. After he came home, he was an oil driller. One day there was an explosion and all his clothes were burned off him except for the band of his shirt collar. While in the war one of the boys saw Col. Ellsworth shot. He wrote home asking that the new baby be named Ellsworth. After Franklin (Frank) Goodrich died, a daughter was born to Jonathan and Jane, they named her Frankie.

In 1887, Jane Goodrich received a pension of $12 a month and $2,200 back pay on Franklin who died in Andersonville prison.

This history was originally completed by Marguerite Razey, August 15, 1963, She was a great great granddaughter of Jonathan and Jane Goodrich. It was brought up to date by Joyce Razey Lucas, Nov. 15, 1967. She is a great great great grandaughter of Jonathan and Jane Goodrich. In July 1997, the history was updated by Joyce Razey Lucas and Sheryl Doud Gustafson whose husband is a great great grandson of Jonathan and Jane Goodrich.
