The Morning After

"The Morning After" by Chloe

I don't own any of the Dawson's Creek charchters, and I'm writing this fanfiction purely for entertainment purposes, I'm not making money off of it. If you want to post my stories on your page, please ask first, ok? I'll let you, I just want to know about it, that's all. Thanks to everyone's kind words about my stories. The feedback is really cool, and I appreciate it.

"Man, Dawson, that was classic last night. Wouldn't you just *love* to be a fly on the wall of Fox Cabin #1 right about now?" Pacey asked his friend around a mouthful of toothpaste as they stood in front of the sinks, brushing their teeth the next morning. Leaning over, Dawson spit in the sink, and then looked up at Pacey grinning.

"Tell me about it. We should probably expect a revenge attack sometime soon, knowing Joey," Dawson said, laughing. "I'll bet that those two are sitting around this very second, plotting our very demise. Of course, it'll never be as good as ours was." The two boys high-fived, and Dawson noticed Pacey's sudden look of preoccupation. "Pacey? What's wrong?"

"Tell, me Dawson, did you notice Joey talking to that guy yesterday in the rec hall? They were looking pretty cozy, and I'm even comfortable enough with myself and my sexuality to admit that he was pretty cute," Pacey said. Dawson gave him knowing look, and smiled to himself as Pacey fumbled for an explaination about his protectivness of Joey. "I mean, if she wants to go and ride the whole Camp McGillis Lake staff, who am I to tell her to remain in her chaste state? I just think she should take her time with this one. It's not like Joey was going for you or me, guys she's known her whole life, this one's a stranger...she doesn't know him at all."

Dawson thought for a moment before responding, "I think in the long run, Joey *will* want to end up with someone she's been friends with forever. But, Pace, we're 15 years old, and now's the time to try new and different things. Maybe this is Joey's way of testing the world, to see how she likes the people in it. Think about it, us three have had our own little, idealistic world where everything can be scripted and you can always rewind the video if you miss something vital, and...and that's not how the real world operates." Pacey sighed and nodded, before shrugging his shoulders.

"I know, I know," he said. "Dawson, I'm having a mental battle with myself right now over whether to tell you something or not, and befor eone team wins, I need your promise not to tell anyone what I might tell you." Pacey looked at Dawson seriously, and Dawson shook his hand, just as seriously. Pacey apparently decided to tell Dawson his little secret, and sits on the window sill. "Ok, here we go. All right, you know how Joey and I always rip on each other? Well, before it was just friends teasing and having a good time, but lately...it's more like...flirting, at least on my side," PAcey mumbled, turning his face away. "It's probably the same to her that it's always been, but for me, now I kinda look forward to seeing her, just so I can trade insults and have a reason to speak to her. I think...I think I'm falling in love with Joey, Dawson."

Dawson's mouth dropped. He knew that PAcey's gaurded secret was his jones for Joey, but he had no idea it was that serious. "Wow... That's great Pacey. I'm a little shocked, but I'll recover,"Dawson said, patting Pacey on the back. "You know, Pace, I kinda thought that maybe Joey liked you too when we first got here, but I dismissed it because I didn't think you felt the same."

"Yea, well I did, and I even thought about asking her to the camp mixer next week, untill she started swooning over Mr.Cutie," Pacey said bitterly.

"Oh, come on, we don't even know if she likes him. Maybe they were just talking, and he can't even put a sentence together, ok? I wouldn't worry, I saw them talking yesterday, too, and it didn't look to serious to me," Dawson said, trying to cheer Pacey up.

"Yea, I guess it's too soon to start assuming things," Pacey said. "Oh, crap, look at the time, we're gonna be late for breakfast, and miss the girls grand entrance," he said laughing. Dawson joined him and the two boys rounded up their charges and headed for the rec hall.

"Beep, beep, beep, beep..." Jen's alarm clock continued irritatingly.
"Jen, shut that thing up now, or I won't be a happy camper much longer," Joey growled from beneath her covers.

"Actually, Jo, we should get up now anyways. Breakfast starts at 8 and its seven fifteen now," Jen yawned from the other side of the room. "Come on, girls, time to get up! Wakey-wakey, sunshines!" Jen sat up in bed and clapped her hands loudly. A chorus of moans and groans were heard from the bunk beds arund the cabin.

"Of, fine, but I'm telling you now, Jen, if you remain a morning person for the whole summer, you'll have to go find another cabin to live in," Joey said and she sat up groggily. A glance over at Jen had her laughing hysterically a moment later. Jen looked up at Joey's sudden burst of laughter, and she too, started giggling.

"Look at you!" They both screamed in unison, and then stopped suddenly.

"Me? What's wrong with me? I'm laughing at you!" Jen said in a panicked voice.

"Well, for starters, look in the mirror! You have ink all over your face! Why are you cracking up over me?" Joey replied. With one sudden, swift movement, both girls were up out of their warm beds, and in the bathrooms, staring at their reflections in horror. Joey fingered the message Pacey had scrawled across her forhead with permanent ink in shock. Jen moaned as she inspected the damage done to her face.

"I cannot *believe* those two! It just goes to show you that brains as small as theirs find this funny! I knew they were planning something, I just didn't know what. Had I any idea it would be this immature, I would have beatent them to it," Joey annonced angerily.

"I never knew that Pacey and Dawson were capable of this kind of sneaking around. They must have snuck in here last night while we were asleep. Doesn't that give you the creeps?", Jen asked plaintitivley.

"Uggh! It's not coming off! Jen, the guys used a permanent pen!" Joey said frantically, scrubbing her face raw with soap. "This blows. How are we ever going to pay them back after this little stunt?"

"You know, Joey, ignorance is the best weapon against immaturity. Wouldn't it just drive Dawsin anfd Pacey mad if we totally played it off, acted like nothing even happened? They would be crushed that they didn't get a reaction," Jen said.

"That's true...but I don't know if I would be able to stand not punching them both within the hour" Joey answered darkly. "Well...try. Hard."

Pacey caught sight of Joey and Jen as they entered the rec hall, with various little girls around them. Clearly visible on both their faces were somewhat the somewhat faded desings of the night before. Jen's hair had a green tint to it, but PAcey wasn't sure if it was from the food coloring, or just a mind game. Neither of them looked self-concious, or emmbarrased and they chatted with the kids as they walked to the table next to Pacey and Dawson. Pacey nudged his friend and whispered, "Here she comes, Miss Amereica..." Dawson looked up and gave Pacey a puzzled and slightly dissapointed expression when he saw that the girls didn't seem effected by all of their midnight efforts.

"This really sucks, Jen," Joey whispered, and tried to smile easily and act natural.

"I know, it's so tempting to go smack then upside the head," the blonde answered. "You're doing great, though."

"Yea, it's kind of ironic. After years of starring in Dawson's films, my acting talents have really improved. Now, I'm acting like Dawson's little joke didn't even faze me," Joey said, laughing. Jen smiled, and touched her hair. Unforunatley for Jen, she had been the first in the shower this morning, and discovered the guys' second suprise:green food coloring in the shampoo.

"Hey, girls, sleep well?" Pacey asked, trying to get them started. Jen and Joey just glanced at him, before replying in a normal tone.

"Yea, pretty well, except for having to wake up at the butt crack of dawn," and "Fine, thanks, and you?"

"Uh, yea, great sleep," Pacey said, confused. He turned to Dawson, and said in a hushed voice, "Man, I'm dissapointed. they don't even care." Dawson nodded, feeling the same way.

"Hey, Joey!"
A voice called behind the pretty brunette after breakfast. Joey turned around and was immediately face to face with Jake. "Oh, hey," she said shyly.

"Hi," he replied, trying hard not to stare at the black pen marks all over her face. He shrugged and continued. "Well, good news, I hope. i got my friend to trade night's off with me, si now I have Tuesday also. Would you like to catcha a movie with me next week?" Jake asked.

"Sure that sounds great. i'm glad you were able to move things around," Joey said sweetly. She then remembered her ink covered face, and felt herself blush. "Um, and I'll try to look a little more presentable before Tuesday. Some friends decided tomplay some tricks last night, and they had an urge to use permanent pen, of course."

"No problem. You look pretty even with that stuff on your face," Jake said. "Well, I gotta go. I'll catch you sometime before Tuesday, and we can make plans , ok?"

"Sounds good. See you," Joey said dreamily. He waved and turned and walked away. When Jake was out of sight, Joey quietly did a little victory dance. Little did she knwo, Pacey was standin behind a tree, and had just witnessed the entire conversation. Damn, he thought o himself, I'm too late.
