The sun grazed Allison's face as she turned in her bed. Opening her eyes, she smiled in contentment. She always marveled at the serenity and peace that she awoke to every morning at the Potter's household. True there was often the piercing sound of Alex's crying, but that was nothing compared to the mad noises of all the different orphanages and foster homes that she had been tossed in the last sixteen years of her life. Here she awoke with a friendly and loving atmosphere. For the last two weeks she had slept in the Potter's living room, and relished every kind word that Bessie had given her. Allison loved Bessie and her new home. But as the minutes passed, this momentary contentment departed and pure anger and resentment toward Joey filled he head as it did every day. Allison smiled smugly at how easily she had fooled everyone. Except for the rough beginning days, Joey was accepting and trusting her, and Dawson seemed to like Allison more each day. Allison knew Joey and Dawson's history and about Jen arriving on the scenes in time to create major problems. Allison had also watched Jen's present destruction. The episode at the beach party had not been Jen's last involvement with alcohol, and the distance between her and her friends was growing. According to Joey, Jen hadn't been in school all last week. Allison stretched her arms and sat up on the couch.
"Hey Ally"
Allison turned around, and saw Joey coming out of her room dressed to kill. She was wearing a short peach skirt with a white blouse. Her hair was curled around her shoulders, and the faintest bit of make up could be detected on her face. "Hey where are you going all dressed up?"
Joey grimaced at the mention of her appearance. "I know its gruesome isn't it? But Pacey asked me to go with his parents to Sunday brunch, and I want to make a good impression."
"I didn't think that Pacey cared what his parents thought?"
Joey sat down beside Allison while putting on her white sandals. "He says that he doesn't, but he's been like an excited puppy all week."
Joey stood up and grabbed an apple of the kitchen table. "Well I'm off. See you later."
"Bye" Allison watched Joey skip out to meet her boyfriend with disgust. "That's right Joey. Go have fun while you can because I'm going to see to it that when I'm done here that you live the rest of your life as miserable as I have. All I need now is an accomplice."

"BEEP BEEP" Jen groaned and rolled over in her bed to turn off her alarm clock. She knocked it off the bed table, and it rolled, still ringing, under the bed. "Great" Flipping over on her stomach, Jen leaned under the bed and slammed the alarm clock off. Lying back down, a disturbing thought occurred in her brain. "I didn't set my alarm last night."
"No I did."
Jen bolted up and saw Allison sitting in the rocking chair beside her window. "What are you doing here?"
Allison stood up and walked around the bedroom inspecting everything. "Your grandmother left the door unlocked. Doesn't she know that's unsafe in this dangerous society?"
"I didn't ask how you got here. I asked what you're doing here setting my alarm for the ungodly hour of nine o'clock."
"Well Jen for those of us that don't have hangovers nine o'clock is..."
"I am not hung over."
"Oh right Jen. That's why you have black bags under your eyes, and you reek of alcohol. "
Jen swung her legs down and sat up on the bed facing Allison. "Whatever Ally. What do you want?"
"I just came to make sure that you were okay. Unlike certain other so called friends, I do care about you. "
"Ally were not friends. We hardly know each other."
Allison sat down on the bed next to Jen and clasped her hand in her own. "But I want to be there for you. I've seen this destructive road that you're going down because of Joey, and I just can't stand to see her do this to you."
"What are you talking about? Joey has nothing to do with this."
"Jen you poor deluded fool. She has everything to do with your problems. When did you start drinking again? After you broke up with Dawson because he was in love with JOEY. What happened to your friendship with Pacey? It died after he started going out with JOEY. And when was the last time that JOEY stopped and spent time with you."
Jen shook her head attempting to clear her clouded mind. What Allison was saying seemed to make sense yet it was impossible. Could Joey really be the cause of all her problems?
"Think about it Jen. It all makes sense. Joey is happier than ever and it's all because of your unhappiness. Let me help you destroy her joy and gain your own. "
"Why are you helping me? I thought that Joey was your sister."
Allison just smiled and patted Jen on the shoulder. "Let's just say that I have some unfinished business with my dear sister."
"I don't know Ally. I wanted to become friends with Joey. Not cause her pain."
Allison scoffed. "You think that Joey is going to want to be friends with you now? She thinks that she's better than you are now. All she talks about at home is how pathetic you are and how she thinks that all this drinking is just an excuse to get Dawson back."
Jen looked up shocked and hurt. "She said that?"
"That and more. Look Jen its time that someone let Joey Potter know that she isn't the most important person in the world."
Jen paused and then looked up slowly. "How do we do that?"
Allison smiled wickedly. "Dawson"

"They hate me."
Pacey put his arms around his distressing girlfriend and chuckled at her dramatic antics. "No they do not hate you. They only talked to you for ten minutes. They don't know you enough to hate you yet."
Joey pulled away and hit Pacey on the arm. "Pacey!! This is serious. I walk into the room and ten minutes later your parents walk out due to a family emergency? It was obvious something I said."
"It didn't occur to you that there was a family emergency?"
"Pacey your entire family was in the room. Usually a family emergency needs a family member in an EMERGENCY. Not sitting at a table enjoying brunch."
"Joey for the last time they do not hate you. Besides what do you care? I don't."
"I want them to like me."
"Well I like you and that's all that counts."
Joey turned around in Pacey's arms and smiled coyly up at him. "You like me Mr. Witter?"
"No! I'm just going out with you because of your excessive popularity and tremendous influence. All of which will boost me into a position of power in this small rinky dink town."
"And here I thought it was my alluring sex appeal that kept you coming back."
Pacey leaned down and delicately kissed Joey on the lips. His lips slowly then traveled down to her collarbone and back to her soft lips. "That too." He whispered in her ear.

Dawson was lying on his bed watching the nightly news while munching on a bag of chips. He was extremely agitated and kept screaming at the television. "Stupid weather! Why are you predicting rain tonight? There isn't a cloud in sight. OH that's right. Spend thirty minutes on the world cup...its not like there are important topics in the world like murders and crimes..." Although Dawson seemed to be furious at the screen, he was actually furious at Joey. It was nine o'clock on a SATURDAY, and she wasn't over here yet. Its not like he should have expected anything else though since she had been late every movie night since she started going out with Pacey. Last week she had been so late that he had been asleep when she arrived. After apologizing profusely, Joey promised that she would be on time this week. "I can't believe she stood me up again. Does this friendship mean nothing to her?" At that moment Dawson heard the ladder clang as someone climbed it. "Finally! But if she thinks that l'll forgive her so easily than she has another thing coming." Dawson turned his back to the window and waited until he heard the window opened. "Nice that you finally showed up," he said angrily.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know that you were expecting me."
Dawson cringed as he heard Ally's voice. "Oops sorry. I thought you were Joey."
"Joey's supposed to come over here tonight?"
Dawson looked up surprised. "Yeah! Why did she say something to you?"
"No it's just that she went out with Pacey earlier and said she wasn't going to back until late."
The words cut threw Dawson like a knife. She had just blown him off? Not even attempting to make it over here? Well fine he thought angrily to himself. I can have fun without you Joey. Just you wait and see. "Oh no problem."
"Are you okay Dawson you seem kinda upset. Anything I can do?"
Dawson looked over at the beautiful girl sitting beside him on the bed. Maybe Joey had the right idea. Maybe it was time to make new friends. Joey had wanted to grow up...well maybe its time they did. "Actually there is something you can do. Ally, would you like to go see a movie?"
Ally smiled sweetly. "I'd love too, but what about Joey?"
"What about her?"

"This is just great," thought Joey as she ran from the boat to Dawson's ladder. It was nine thirty, and she had promised Dawson she would be there on time. She had spent the last two hours at the ruins waiting for Pacey. After working her shift at the Icehouse, Joey had gone home to find a message from Allison saying that Pacey was waiting at the ruins for her and to come immediately. Remembering what had happened at brunch, Joey wasted no time getting over there, but when she arrived there had been no sign of Pacey. She had spent the last two hours waiting for him before she had given up. Now Dawson would be mad at her for being late and for that reason she was furious at Pacey's unless there really was an emergency. Joey hurriedly climbed up the ladder and rushed through the window. "Hey Dawson. I'm so sorry that I'm late but I..." Joey looked into an empty room. "Where did he go?"

TWO WEEKS LATER

"Hey Jo, wait up. Can I talk to you?"
Joey turned to see Jen running to catch up with her. Although she was worried about Jen, Joey still cared for her and hoped that her drinking days were over. "Sure Jen. What's up?"
Jen stopped for a moment to catch her breath. "Hold on," she gasped. "Okay well I was wondering if you had seen Dawson lately?"
Joey hung her head and murmured, "No"
Jen looked at her quizzically. "No? But you and Dawson are best friends. What's going on?"
Joey thought back to two weeks ago. After waiting at Dawson's until midnight, he finally showed up. Each mad at the other, a fight began between the two until finally they realized that it was pointless and had given up the battle. Yet Joey had seen little of Dawson outside of school the last couple of weeks. He had called to cancel their movie night last week, which had been a great disappointment to Joey. "Well we've both been really busy this week and had other stuff to do."
"That and now that he's dating Ally he probably..."
"Whoa wait a minute. He's dating Ally? Since when?"
"Well it's been like a week or two. He hasn't told you yet?"
Joey shook her head in amazement. Her best friend was dating her half sister, and he hadn't even mentioned it to her? "No, he hasn't, but I'm sure he will. Ummm look Jen I gotta go. Talk to you later."
Jen watched Joey run off clearly upset. Guilty emotions washed over her. This wasn't what she wanted. She didn't want to hurt Joey. Jen was about to run after her when she heard a voice behind her.
"This is perfect," came Ally's smooth voice behind her. "Now that Joey knows about me and Dawson things will move quickly into place."
Jen turned toward Ally and scowled at her. "Are you even dating Dawson really?"
"Not totally, but we have hung around each other a lot, and I plan to make my move any day now. Besides it doesn matter if it is true. All that matters is that Joey believes it and acts on it."

"Pacey where are we going?"
"You'll find out in a minute Jo. Just trust me."
"That's easy for you to say. You're not the one being led around blind folded by a guy who trips even when he can see."
"Hey! I'd watch those insults if I were you. Your life is in my hands."
"Okay Okay! But tell me where we are going."
"Nope. Not until we get there."
"And when will that be?"
Pacey stopped, turned Joey, and pulled off the blindfold. "NOW!!"
Joey blinked several times from the quick exposure to sunlight. After her eyes adjusted, Joey looked around. They were in the ruins standing beside a picnic basket and a blanket. Soft music was playing in the background. "Pacey what is all this?" Joey exclaimed.
Pacey's face feel as he realized that Joey had no idea of what tonight was. He sat down on the blanket and sighed. "You really don't remember what tonight is do you?"
Joey's mouth dropped and her eyes widened. "Oh Pacey I am so sorry. It's our one month anniversary today and I forgot." Joey knelt down beside Pacey and placed her arm around Pacey. "I'm sorry sweetie. I know that these are the kind of things that I'm supposed to remember and everything but with all that's going on in my life right now with Allison and..."
Pacey placed his finger over Joey's lips. "Sssh! It's all right. I'm not really that mad. The important thing is that you're here with me right now." Pacey leaned down and kissed Joey softly at first and then with more intensity.
After a few minutes, Joey gently pushed him back. "Isn't there any food in that basket that we need to eat."
"UGH! I knew I should have left the food at home. Okay here's the deal...I feed you and you massage some of these knots out of my back from slaving away all day over a hot stove for you."
Joey pulled out a container with a price label on it. "Home cooked huh? I didn't know that you had to buy the food from your own kitchen."
Pacey blushed slightly. "SO I had a little help... Do I still get my massage?"
Joey smiled affectionately down at her boyfriend who was lying on his stomach on the blanket. Sighing, she sat down on his back and began to message his shoulders. "Hey you don't get a complete break. Start putting that food out."

Thirty minutes later most of the food was gone. Joey was lying with her head in Pacey's lap telling him about Dawson and Ally. "And I can't believe that he didn't even tell me. I'm supposed to be his best friend and he can't even tell me the truth...Pacey what are you doing?" Joey asked and Pacey leaned down to kiss her.
"What am I doing? I'm attempting to kiss my GIRLFRIEND on our anniversary in one of the most romantic spots in the whole world. I'm not seeing the problem."
"I was talking to you Pacey. That's the problem."
"I know Jo. But I don't want to talk."
Joey sat up, her eyes flashing. "Oh I see. My problems are so boring that you can't even concentrate long enough to hear them... or is it that you don't care as long as you get what you want...meaning a make out session?"
Pacey groaned and ran his hands through his hair anxiously. “That’s not what a meant Joey and you know it. I just meant that I want to be here with you. Not Dawson and Ally and Jen and whoever else seems to come in between us being alone lately. We haven spent any real time together, just us. Meaning not thinking about the others or talking about them. I just want to be with you Jo. Just you.”
Softening at his speech, Joey moved to sit in Pacey's lap. "Okay you're right. I'm here with you and only you." She leaned down and passionately kissed him. Pacey responding to her kiss placed his arms around her and held her tight. They kissed for a few minutes until Joey broke the silence. "Pacey?"
"Uh huh?" Pacey murmured while nibbling on her ear.
"Do you think that Allison will hurt Dawson?"
Pacey pushed Joey back. "What?"
"Well do you think that she's using him for some purpose. You know, for her own gain."
Pacey's eyes flashed angrily. "Jo what happened to just us? Are ten minutes all we get? Gee I'm feeling the love here."
"I'm sorry, but I can't help it. I'm worried about him. He is our friend after all."
Pacey sighed. "I know and I care about him too, but Jo, Dawson is a big boy and he can take care of himself. Besides Ally would never hurt any of us. Now would you just relax and let Dawson go?"
"Okay you win. No more talk of Dawson."
Pacey smiled. "Now where were we?"
Joey leaned in and kissed him on the lips. "Right about here."
Pacey leaned Joey down on the blanket and kissed Joey in a way that usually made her heart race and body tremble, but tonight all she could think of Dawson. Her head was filled with questions about what was going on, and she wanted to talk about it, yet Pacey wanted a romantic night between the two of them. She attempted to just ignore her thoughts, but finally she gave in and spoke. "Pacey how much do you think Dawson likes her? I mean is she just a good friend or more?"
Pacey stood up and crossed his arms "That's is Jo. I've tried but I can't make you want to be with me."
Joey stood up to look him in the eye. "That's not what this is about Pace. I just want to talk about Dawson and Allison right now. I need to talk about this because its bothering me."
"Its always about Dawson, isn't it Jo."
"No it's not, but I don't think it's unreasonable for me to be concerned about a friend. I thought you would understand, but I guess you don't."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"What do you mean, "what does it mean?' "
Pacey looked hard at her. You expect me to understand because Dawson would right?
Joey matched his fierce look. "Well he probably would as a matter of fact."
Pacey spat out the last words. "Then why don't you go be his girlfriend because you sure aren't mine." Saying that, Pacey turned around and stalked out of the ruins back to his car.
Joey watched him go and felt a small pain in her chest, but she didn't run after him because deep down she wondered if he was right.
