October 4th: The Ride was postponed to next Sunday, October 11th,
due to rain.
October 11th: The Morning began with the Triathlon Club holding their
autumn three leg event, 5K Run, 5K Bicycle, 5K Run. The many classes
from older teen to 60 and above for both men's and women's divisions
were attended. The New York Road Racing Club held Grete's Great Gallop
as a NYC Marathon tune up event. The NYCRR needs better medical coverage.
5 Boro, NYRC, CRC, and another local unorganized group had rides from a
45 B/C to the usual CRC weekend training ride to Nyack.
Our Ride to the Mt. Vernon St. Paul's Bill of Rights National Historic
Site went very well. Cool weather, light breeze, moderate traffic. We
ended with a picnic at Pelham Bay Park and inspected the rowing deck.
October 13th, Tuesday: We joined the Weekday Cyclists(see webpage link)
for a damp and slightly drizzly morning two laps around the Central Park
loop with a good group. Fun exercise and friendly camaraderie. All we
need is a little sunshine.
October 15th, Thursday: We again participated with the Weekday Cyclcists
for a 4 lap Central Park loop self test ride. With five riders we all
finished between about 1:45 to 1:55 minutes for the self test. From the
test chart that calculates to about 15 to 16 miles per hour. At least one
rider did a sweep for the 4 laps. Good times for a recreational group!!
October 18, 1998, Sunday: The day was cool with a light breeze and beautifully
sunny. We traveled over East 58th Street to over the bridge and to Roosevelt
Island. We got to the Lighthouse Park area and then decided on our route for
the day. An absolutely grand and wonderful bicycling day and event.
October 20, 1998, Tuesday: Cool and lightly breezy morning with several
recreational loops around the park. We took a number of photos we will
post as soon as they're developed and the new scanner arrives. (Weekday C. Ride)
October 22, 1998, Thursday: Grand ride to Englewood Cliffs and Tenefly,
New Jersey, area and the Nature Preserve. Over the GW Bridge and through
the New Jersey pastoral suburban countryside. Colorful leaves falling and
and an occasional brisk wind certainly brought the coming autumn to the
front. A traverse through the Nature Preserve; Canade Geese, froggies,
sparrows, chickadees; made a beautiful event. Back to Central Park at 3:00pm for hot chocolate. What a great day!!! (Weekday C. Ride)
October 25, 1998, Sunday: It was an active morning and began early departing
the LOEB Boathouse shortly after 8:00amEST. So the ride went at about the
sub B level. Good temp and nearly no wind made a fabulous ride to the Cloisters. We've been getting photos with expectations on the new scanner arrival. And today's light and setting at the Cloisters were GORGEOUS!! All we need is to develop the picts!! Back to LOEB; less than an hour. The W168th Street to 110 Street St. Nicholas Avenue bicycle lane is really pretty good condition and certainly helps with bicycling blocking traffic. Great Day, and we made the 11:00amEST Health meeting early!!
October 27, 1998, Tuesday: A chilly and spitting rain day. One or two regulars were stymied by the rain reports. But the rest of us made a few quick
tours around the Loop. Buns and hot tea, coffee, and chocolates made the chills
go far away. It is getting to be time to get all the winter riding gear
ready for day by day use. Good ride for a cloudy and little wet day.
(Weekday C. Ride)
October 29, 1998, Thursday: Several of the regulars have some sort of winter
cold or fluish thing. So from that the ride today was cancelled. And as it
is the last October Thursday; this was the final scheduled Thursday Ride for
the year organized by the Weekday Cyclists. We thank both the organizers for
their dedication and care to safe and fun recreational bicycling. Tuesday
rides continue through the winter months.
Since the ride was scheduled, I picked it up as a alternative Central Park
Bicycle Club event. And the day warmed and turned partly sunny for the
ride. The midtown and lower Manhattan waterfront bicycle paths and roadway setasides are a beautiful and historic view of Manhattan. However, some of the bicycle ways are currently under construction. The ride went well. But we suggest you always do this ride with an experienced Manhattan borough bicycle guide as some of the construction areas are poorly posted or not at all and are
very confusing. Otherwise, it is one of the premier Manhattan bicycle rides.
