May 2, 1999, Sunday: Today was the 5 Boro Bicycle Club
BIKE NEW YORK 42 miles and 5 Boro Ride. We had about
30,000 bicyclists from all over and New York City and
region. Gosh, it was so very exciting!!!!! They left
Battery Park at about 8:00am and reached Central Park
just before 9:00am. It took nearly 2 hours for them
all to clear our Central Park review site. Then we
did our Roosevelt Island Ride and watched as the
BIKE NEW YORK bicyclists rolled over the Upper Level
for the 59th Street Bridge. Bicycles all the way!!!!!
May 9,1999, Sunday: They are back!! All our bicycle addicts,
enthusiasts, and concerned others have returned full force
for our Sunday morning gathering. Today, we had about 8
rides go out from the A Century to Nyack and back to
(two) upper and lower Manhattan Waterfront rides. The
seniors division had about 15 showing. (Our oldest local
member claims to be 91 with several over 80!!) And
the Asian international group did their usual Sunday
training ride. Waweeee!! THE BICYCLES ARE BACK!!!
May 16, 1999, Sunday: We had about five rides go out.
Today was one of our huge Central Park fund raising
events that can take over much of the park for several
hours. But it is always good to see so many out to
support their favorite charities. From lung diseases
and leukemia to animal cancer, we have just about all
of them. And they make for exciting days!!!
......We headed to the Bronx's famous Orchard Beach at
Pelham Bay Park right on Long Island Sound. And while
the wind was just a bit more than perfect, the warm
sunny views and good temps made a nearly perfect riding
day. We did our usual water and rest stop at the
Morrisania Hub with the old Bronx Night Court Landmark
site under construction. GREAT DAY for all!!
May 23, 1999, Sunday: The rain found us today. Again,
a grand fund raising event filled the Park with enthusiastic
participants. And the BOSTON to NEW YORK AIDS RIDE
Training Rides began again. But the rain ended our usual
Sunday morning rides other than a few individual stalwarts
who consider drips, drops, splashes, squishes, slips and
slides, and generally wetwetwetness to be only minor
hindrances to day by day bicycling.
We toured to downtown via the Westside waterfront and took
the Staten Island Ferry from Battery Park. However, when
we reached Staten Island, the rain was a downpour. And
we returned immediately. The short ride and roundtrip
boating adventure were really great. But all the water
delivered from above did kaybash our usual bicycling event.
Until next week, .....
May 30, 1999, Sunday: Today marked the beginning of our BOSTON
to NEW YORK AIDS RIDE local New York City training rides preparatory
to the 300 mile September event. It is always so encouraging to
see the new and old dedicated riders getting up and going for
it with today two rides going out. We followed our own scheduled
ride and enjoyed a lovely ride to the New York Botanical Garden.
The garden is on its summer schedule finally, but from that does
not allow bicycles. So we will not be back to enjoy the beautiful
location until after the autumn season resumes. What a gorgeous
day and recreational adventure it was.
May 31, 1999: Monday, Memorial Day: We took our usual CPBC ride to
Mt. Vernon and the St. Paul National Bill of Rights Landmark Historic
Site Memorial Day Ride. The site is always lovely and especially
on a holiday with significance to the site's historic value. And
we discovered one huge hydranga bush where we enjoyed a light
picnic and iced tea. Another grand ride!!!
