January 1999 Ride Minutes and Minutes Archive Link

does our little person look like thinking of cross country skiing?? NO!! It looks like it and a good idea. But the little person is a skater from the Wollman Rink crew!!

January 3, 1999, Sunday: Due to freezing rain, poor road conditions, and the possibility of hypothermia, today's ride is postponed to next Sunday, January 10, 1999. Thank you for your careful riding on winter roads and streets.

January 10, 1999, Sunday: Wowee, did we ever have a cold week!! We met for breakfast this morning as usual but postposed the Roosevelt Island ride (again) due to icy streets. Ice is very dangerous for most transportation from feet to trucks and buses. We hope to get to the Island next week. Several quick loops around the park made the day. Be assured we were tightly layered with sweaters and vests and socks and gloves (etc.). It is coldcoldcold!!!

January 15 and 16, 1999, Friday and Saturday: We had a grand visit with some of the Trinity Presbyterian Church members from the senior activity programs and enjoyed joining their Saturday evening dinner meeting. They are considering developing a reading society and choral group, and some members want a range of fitness activities. So we hope along with the Central Park Artists' Registry to work with them. The church is about 5 blocks from the park. Saturday evening we also enjoyed a performance by the wonderful community troupe at the Looking Glass Theater, another Trinity Church program. Good thoughts and ideas for our future!!!

January 17th, 1999, Sunday: Finally, we made our Roosevelt Island trip. The day was absolutely grand as a January thaw gave us temperatures in the mid 40's reaching to near 50°F by noontime. And while plenty of snow and ice managed to call parts of the road home, mostly we only faced wettish surface conditions and corner piled slush!! We stopped to ponder the incoming tidal flows at Lighthouse Park and adventured on the midTown Tram for return. Manhattan has a tramway at 59th Street going from Manhattan Island to Roosevelt Island and back much like those found at many European locations. After our ride to Roosevelt Island, we got a subway token and rode the tramway back. Manny, the operator, graciously attended our needs and landed us safely back on Manhattan ground. It proved a thoroughly unique addition to our mid Winter bicycle ride. What a greatgreatgreat day!!!

January 24, 1999, Sunday: We were rained out!! I went to our breakfast. But no one else showed...too much rain!! It was a downpour by 10AM. There is one thing to say, and that is coldweather bicycling is very much like other coldweather sports. But bicycling during rain is just wetwetwet!!! So, we postpone today's ride to next week. Our January so far with only one more Sunday is a very bad weather month. O, well, with certainty we may say that better weather is coming!!!!! See you next week.....

January 31st, 1999, Sunday: O, my goshes, what a COLD day. Our breakfast time temp was all of 13°f and only to 17°f by ride time. Fortunately, we had not too much wind. By about 15 minutes into the ride I strongly realized I was freezing, literally, and stopped at a shoppe for super heavy, insulated gloves and a knitted helmet/face protector thing. That did it; with my bald head and fingers cared for the rest of the ride was toasty warm. Hey, skiing goes much colder than this. And we have only a skim of ice on the boathouse pond and no snow!!! Well, the ride passed through or by the Columbia University hill, the Riverside Church and Park, by the Columbia New York Hospital, the North Harlem and Washington Heights neighborhoods, and finally reached to the Fort Tryon and Cloisters Park, our destination. We looked across the Hudson River to the New Jersey Palisades. We looked up the Hudson River. We stopped briefly at the Fort Tryon and Cloisters Park Cafe and enjoyed the warmth and good smells of hot beverages and snacks. And then we made our rapid pedalpedalpedal back to our home base at Central Park. There is something about the days with cold air. Is it clearer, is the sunshine brighter, is it the crispness of the atmosphere??? But what an invigorating and inspiring ride and absolutely beautiful event. Cold weather or not; when wisely prepared, it is a grand way to spend one's winter morning!!!
