Central Park Bicycle Club February 2000 Minutes

February 6, 2000, Sunday: Another cold, cold morning meeting with about three riders who went out. We had an organizing meeting and cancelled the day's ride.

February 13, 2000, Sunday: We finally are beginning to return to our regular schedule after all the missed rides from the scheduling congestion during the Year 2000 changeover. A quick tour out to Roosevelt Island and the Vicky Holland (famous) Lighthouse at the island northend park, too cold for a picnic but still a beautiful, short morning ride. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day; happy hearts and kissy kissy for all for the day of sweet romances.

February 20, 2000, Sunday: It's still a bit cold but slowly warming. But what a gorgeous day it was. Friday we had a moderate snow storm and Saturday it was "wetted" by warmer weather and fog. So greeting us this morning were icy trees and bright sun for a picture postcard view of Central Park and all around the Boathouse. We had quite a few riders go out sort of by straggling here and there with one group of five. I did the Manhattan Waterfront Ride along the Westside Greenway, through the Battery and Wagner Park, and up through the Eastside Park. About a third of the Westside was pretty icy but passable with my semislicks with lug sidewalls. Lower Manhattan and the Eastside were melted for the better part by our time there. We met with a small community committee at the Eastside Park Amphitheatre. It is an abandoned facility just before the midpoint of East River Park that dates back to when the Park was first built. One person graduated from sixth grade at the Amphitheatre. It is extremely run down now but on the list of Parks and Recreation rehab projects. We agree with the committee that it is perfect for classical and worldmusic events, theatrical presentations, lecture and discussion events, and a range of community gatherings. Since it is located on what is filled riprap, the location is not good for such uses as food service. Riprap is a vermin and insect incubation zone that precludes food attentions. We offer our encouragement on the timely and responsive rehabilitation for the Amphitheatre site. On the question regarding snow shoveling for the Boathouse picnic tables, the tables are supervised through the vendor restaurant. Shoveling services must be requested through Parks and Recreation by Park users and not from the restaurant. Shoveling is not part of the restaurant negotiated agreement services. Great Day!! Great Ride!! Good to be back!!!!!

February 27, 2000, Sunday: The weather is getting warm, YES, with predictions to 60 degrees and us from the high 40's to mid 50's!! Summer is on the way!! The New York (Bi) Cycle Club had a training ride with about 25 attendees and one recreational ride to the Bronx. And three other clubs from the A and B level groups went out to several locations. We had to change our scheduled ride from the Cloisters to a second tour along the Manhattan Waterfront due to an emergency situation reported from the routing. The Cloisters ride is postponed to later this spring. With about 75 riders here today or more, it is good to know our bicycling season is getting back together. Good to see everyone again; and hey, hey, hey for another safe and exciting bicycling year!!!
