April 4, 1999, Sunday: Today was Easter Sunday for the regular Christian Churches. We visited the Great Hill and Stone for sunrise. And we had one of our local triclub races, 63 riders for Group 1...27 riders for Group 2...and 31 riders for Group 3, for the early morning activities. Due to the Easter events, I departed early.
April 11, 1999, Sunday: We had a small group from the Leukemia Society doing a short distance fund ride. Good for them!!!!! This is the beginning day for our return to spring bicycling season being the first Sunday after the standard to daylight time change. We are not back up to our usual summer levels of 150 to 200 Sunday ride bicyclists. But most of our core regulars and leaders are returned from the chills of winter. And we had about 75 to 100 today with five rides off and rolling. GOOD TO SEE EVERYONE BACK SAFE AND EXCITED AFTER THE COLD WINTER!!! We did our usual Manhattan Waterfront Ride along the Island Southerly perimeter. What a beautiful ride!!
April 18, 1999, Sunday: Well, I see our bicycle folks are returning from their winter hibernation period. We are beginning to have our morning crowds again. Today was two NYCC rides, a Peter Reilly Ride, a Fast and Fabulous Ride, a Central Park Bicycle Club ride, Terry's Training Group, and one of the BOSTON to NEW YORK AIDS RIDE Training Groups for the New York City area. Last year the event brought 2452 avid and dedicated bicyclists all the way from Boston to New York City. So it is good to know they are getting up for it; plaudits all around!! Our ride to the NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDENS was a grand tour for the lovely and warm spring morning. And our end stop at the Twombly's Garden Shoppe at the Botanical Garden provided some beautiful botanical species with bathroom access and refreshments available, too. There is lots to learn at the Gardens.
April 25, 1999, Sunday: Not only is the CLOISTERS a beautiful New York City Landmark site overlooking the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades but it features several specialty garden areas on the surrounding grounds. The day was beautiful and a face paced ride from Central Park to the Cloisters and back was wonderful. We stopped briefly to chat with the Friends of Ft. Tryon Park who wish to save the NYC Community Gardens from loss to auction sale. Many of the thumbnail "little" park gardens are dearly prized by their neighborhood members whether seniors, children, or just all others. We offer our encouragement to the dedicated Ft. Tryon people and all concerned about appropriate and suitable recreation space that the wonderful recreational area conveyed by the Community Gardens "little" parks is not lost.
