Owen Hart, the youngest of the Hart
brothers, was born in Calgary, Alberta Canada
on May 7, 1966. The youngest of Stu and
Helen's 14 children, Owen Hart would become
one of the greatest athletes ever to grace a
wrestling ring. Owen Hart mixed technical
wrestling and high flying, and in my opinion,
took his brother's place as the Excelence of
Execution.
Owen, like every other Hart brother, would start wrestling for his father's Calgary based, Stampede Wrestling. Owen also wrestled for New Japan Pro Wrestling and made two appearences on WCW Saturday Night during his NJPW days. When Owen finally hit the "big time" in the WWF, he had a masked gimmick as The Blue Blazer. As the Blazer, Owen never really gained much popularity, and disappeared from WWF TV. Two years later, in 1991, when Bret Hart began pursuing a singles career, "The Rocket" Owen Hart teamed up with Bret's former tag team partner, Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart to form The New Foundation. The New Foundation never really went anywhere and Neidhart abandonned the team to do color commentary on WWF Wrestling Challenge. Owen Hart then teamed with Koko B Ware to form High Energy. The team was very impressive with their high flying style but still never won a title or rose above mid-card status.
At the 1993 Survivor Series, Owen Hart and
his brothers Bret, Bruce, and Keith teamed up
to fight Shawn Michaels' team of the Red,
Black, and Blue Knights. Owen was the only
Hart brother eliminated during that match
when he ran into the ropes and accidentally
knocked Bret Hart off the apron. Whil Owen
was watching to see if his brother was okay,
Shawn Michaels rolled him up for the pin.
This event would lead to the biggest feud of
1994. At the 1994 Royal Rumble, Owen and Bret
teamed up to take on the Quebecers for the
WWF Tag Team Title. The referee would stop
the match because of Bret's injured leg 16
minutes into the match. Owen attacked his
brother after the match and accused him of
being selfish. Owen says that Bret should of
tagged him in when he had the chance, but
Bret was too selfish and had to hog all the
spotlight. Owen cleanly beat his brother in a
classic match at Wrestlemania X. Bret
however, would go on to beat Yokozuna later
on in the night to become the WWF World
Champion. Owen, later on in the year, would
follow in his brother's footsteps and become
the WWF 1994 King of the Ring renaming
himself "The King of Harts". The Owen/Bret
feud would come to a head at Summer Slam '94
when the two would face off in a legendary
steel cage match for the WWF World Title.
Bret did walk away from the steel cage with
his WWF World Title, but Owen walked away
with something much greater-the recognition
that he is not just "Bret's brother", but a
great athlete just as good-if not better than
his brother Bret.
Although the cage match was supposed to be
the end of the Hart Family Feud, it was far
from over. Owen and Bret headlined almost
every house show for the WWF in 1994. At the
1994 Survivor Series, Owen became the most
evil heel in the business. Bret Hart was
defending his WWF World Title against Bob
Backlund in a match where the only way to win
was to have your corner man throw in the
towel. Bret's corner man was The British
Bulldog and Backlund's corner man was "The
King of Harts". The British Bulldog was
knocked out by Owen during the match thus
eliminating Backlund's chance of winning
since there was nobody to throw in the towel
for Bret. Bob Backlund caught Bret in his
cross face chicken wing manuever and would
not let go. Owen looked sincerly concerned
about his brother's condition and he urged
his mother, to throw in the towel for Bret.
She did, and we saw that Owen wasn't at all
concerned for his brother's well-being, as he
celebrated Backlund's World Title win.
In 1995, Owen challenged the Smokin' Gunns to
a WWF Tag Team Title match at Wrestle Mania
XI where he would unveil his mystery partner.
Owen announced his new tag team partner as a
man who did what he would love to do-beat his
brother for the WWF World Title. Owen's
mystery partner turned out to be Yokozuna,
and they easily took the Tag Team Titles from
the Smokin' Gunns. Owen and Yokozuna
dominated the tag team circuit and six man
circuit (with British Bulldog, who had just
turned heel). Owen and Yokozuna would later
lose the titles back to The Smokin' Gunns.
In a match on WWF Raw in November of 1995, Owen Hart hit Shawn Michaels in the back of the head with an inziguri and supposedly brought on "post concussion" syndrome and Michaels was out for several months. Shawn Michaels came back and won the 1996 Royal Rumble, earning himself a title shot against Bret Hart at Wrestle Mania XII. Michaels defended his World Title shot against Owen Hart at the February 1996 In Your House. Michaels won the match however. Owen then turned his attention towards six man tag team matches with fellow "Camp Cornette" partners The British Bulldog and Vader (who had replaced Yokozuna). At the 1996 Slammy Awards, Hunter hearst Helmsley announced that that most shocking moment of the year was when Shawn Michaels collapsed on Raw. Hunter then awarded the award for "Squared Circle Shocker" to "the man who made it all possible" Owen Hart who than began calling himself "The Slammy Award Winning" Owen Hart.
Owen Hart and The British Bulldog began to
drift away from Jim Cornette and Vader and
won the Tag Team Titles from The
Smokin'Gunns. Owen and The British Bulldog
were without a doubt the most technically
skilled tag team in the WWF at that time. The
WWF introduced a new title, The European
Title and the finals came down to WWF Tag
Team Champions Owen Hart and The British
Bulldogs. In a great technical match, The
British Bulldog walked away with the gold.
Owen and The Bulldog began teasing a break up
for some time, until Bret Hart returned on
Raw and formed The Hart Foundation consisting
of himself, Owen, The British Bulldog, Jim
Neidhart, and Brian Pillman. The whole
gimmick was unique in that The Hart
Foundation were heels in the United States
and faces in Canada. Owen and The Bulldog
lost their Tag Team Titles to Steve Austin
and Shawn Michaels after challenging the two
to team together thinking the combination
would never work. In February of 1997, Owen
Hart won the WWF Intercontinental Title from
Rocky Maivia without any outside interference
from The Hart Foundation. While presenting a
Slammy at the 1997 Slammy Awards, Owen
decided to just keep the Slammy. Owen then
referred to himself as "The Two Time Slammy
Award Winning" Owen Hart. At the WWF's July
1997 In Your House "Calgary Stampede", Owen
Hart scored the win for the 5 man Hart
Foundation tag team in the main event when he
pinned Steve Austin. Steve Austin then
challenged Owen Hart to a "Kiss My @ss" match
at Summer Slam 97 where if Austin lost the
match, he would kiss Owen's @ss. During the
match, Owen botched a K-Driller piledriver
and injured the neck of Steve Austin. After
the incident Owen began wearing an "Owen
3:16" shirt with "I Just Broke Your Neck" on
the back. The feud was settled at Survivor
Series 1997 when Austin beat Owen in a
rematch. Also during that card, Bret Hart
lost his WWF World Title to Shawn Michaels in
a conspicuous fashion. Bret subsequently left
the WWF along with The British Bulldog and
Jim Neidhart. Many beleived Owen would jump
ship as well, but he just disappeared for a
while.
At the December 1997 In Your House
"Degeneration X", Owen Hart ran into the ring
after the main event attacked Shawn Michaels,
and fled the scene. Owen started calling
himself "The Black Hart" and he sported a
goatee and crew cut.
Owen
never got the World Title push it looked like
he was going to get and instead got caught up
in a feud with Hunter Hearst Helmsley for the
WWF European Title. During an interview,
Shawn Michaels described Owen as a "nugget"
that just won't flush down the toilet.
"Nugget" chants were then customary every
time Owen walked down the aisle. The title
switched
hands between the two before the feud ended
with Triple H and the European Champion. Owen
Hart then joined The Nation Of Domination
with his motto as "Enough is enough, and it's
time for a change" and a Amaresu with a
"Danger" sign on it. When Degeneration X
started a feud with The Nation Of Domination,
Owen Hart was once again the butt of the
jokes. Independent wrestler, Jason Sensation
imitated Owen and insulted him very badly.
The next week on Raw is War however, Owen
took care of Jason Sensation and beat him
senseless. Gradually, Owen left The Nation
and began feuding with Ken Shamrock. Owen and
Shamrock fought in the Hart Family Dungeon at
the July 1998 In Your House "Break Down" and
in the first ever a Lion's Den match at
Summer Slam '98. Owen then began feuding with
Dan Severn, and during a match on Raw, Owen
botched a K-Driller piledriver an injured
Severn's neck (This time it was an angle
though). Owen said he was so upset at what he
had done and he "retired" from Professional
Wrestling.
After 9 years, the Blue Blazer returned to
the WWF, only this time, everybody knew who
it was...or did they? Every time Owen Hart
was seen backstage and was accused of being
the Blue Blazer, he denied it and said he was
retired. Then one night, Owen Hart and the
Blue Blazer appeared at the same place at the
same time proving everybody wrong who thought
it was Owen. The Blue Blazer started feuding
with Steve Blackman who unmasked the Blue
Blazer to be Owen Hart, but who was the other
Blue Blazer? Weeks later, the other Blue
Blazer was unmasked to be Jeff Jarrett. Owen
Hart and Jeff Jarrett formed a great
technical wrestling tag team and were soon
the WWF Tag Team Champions.
Owen and Jarrett defeated every team in the
WWF until they lost their titles to Kane and
X-Pac.
At the WWF's syndicated television special,
WWF Smackdown, the Blue Blazer once again
appeared saying that the WWF needed a
superhero and that he was the guy to do it.
Although it was obvious he was Owen Hart, he
still denied it. The Blue Blazer said that he
was going to rid the WWF of negative
characters such as Val (The Blazer wouldn't
even say his last name because of what it
rhymed with),
and he told the kids to say their prayers,
eat their vitamins, and drink their milk. On
May 23, 1999, at the WWF's May 1999 In Your
House "Over The Edge", the most shocking
moment in wrestling history occurred as Owen
Hart, "disguised" as the Blue Blazer was
descending from the top of the arena. The
cable supporting Owen Hart snapped and he
plumetted 50 feet into the ring, hitting his
head on a turnbuckle. Paramedics rushed to
the scene to try to save recessutate Owen and
after 15 minutes, Owen was taken to a nearby
hospital where sadly, he passed away at the
young age of 34. Owen is survived by his wife
and two young children. The Stungun
will forever be dedicated to Owen Hart, a man
who for ten years was an intricate part of
the World Wrestling Federation. Owen was a
great athlete who died way before his time.
Let's keep Owen and his family in our
prayers.
