Q.E.D. - What does the name mean?
Since its inception in 1992, the staff and members of Q.E.D. have faced this question
numerous times. Each season we teach the answer to the newest members of the guard so they
are not caught unprepared...
Q.E.D. is an abbreviation for the latin phrase "Quod Erat Demonstrandum." Translated, it
means "Thus it has been proven."
The letters Q.E.D. can be found at the end of a proof, mathematical or otherwise, to indicate
that the proof is complete, that all of the statements have valid reasons, and that the
conclusion is true based on those statements and reasons.
The name was chosen by the original director of the guard, who is a mathematician and
was pursuing her Doctorate in Math at the time. And although the leadership of the guard
has changed, the name remains the same.
