Technology Grade 7 - Class Notes
Internet Vocabulary
- HTML - hyper text markup language; the programming language that is used to build a web site
- Browser - software that you need to "view" the world wide web, two examples are Netscape and Explorer
- Internet - a world-wide network of networks connected through phone lines, cables, satellites, and wireless machines
- Network - several computers connected together so they can share information. The Internet is the largest network in the world.
- World Wide Web (www) - a "part" of the Internet that makes it easier for users to connect and jump quickly from one site to another
- URL: Universal Resource Locator or the address of a web site
- e-mail - electronic mail that is sent over the Internet from one user to another. You can send text, images, movies, sounds, etc.
- modem - a special kind of telephone hookup that lets one computer "talk" to another; a typical speed of a modem is 56K .
- server -manages the flow of information on a computer network
- software - the programs that tell your computer how to carry out certain commands
- link - highlighted portions in an Internet document that connects to another site. Also is known as a hot list or hypertext, you can click on text, images, icons, etc.
- peripheral devices - "add-ons" to a computer, such as a scanner, digital camera, zip drive
