Text: Conceptual Physics (9th edition), Paul G. Hewitt. Published by HarperCollins (2000).
What this course will do:
This survey course will touch on the basic principles of physics with an emphasis on understanding the concepts involved (as opposed to the calculational aspects). There will be little math in the course. Math will be used when needed to understand physical relationships, or to familiarize you with some of the great concepts that changed the world. When you leave this course you should be able to construct informed opinions on current science issues.
Assessment
Homework: 20%
One should expect to do 2 hours of work outside of class for each hour in class. Roughly speaking, since this is a 3 hour course, expect to spend 6 hours on homework per week. Do not attempt to take shortcuts here. Break your study sessions into 1 hour blocks. So, 1 hour per day with 1 day off. Not so bad when viewed this way. Homework is to be submitted before you leave class. If you encounter problems or wish to share with others, I encourage you to log onto the Physics 100 discussion web site at WNCC Math Forum .
Labs: 10%
There is a lab simulation each week. The lab simulations are available on line and can be accessed from any computer. Lab worksheets are distributed in class each week. The worksheet is to be completed as you go through the simulation. Labs are to be turned in after class the following week.
Professor Hewitt's Video Worksheet: 10%
Each week a video clip of one of Professor Hewitt's Demonstrations will
be posted on our web site. I will pass out a worksheet at the end of each
class for you to fill out while you view Professor Hewitt do some amazing
things. It's as easy as watching TV. Hand in the worksheet the following
week.
Exams: 10% each (40%)
There are 3 term exams and a final. This means an exam every month. All exams are in class. Please use a calculator where needed. No notes, books, outside material, or human help are permitted.
Attendance
WNCC is a college. Part of
your college experience is developing responsibility. I do take attendance
but do not use this in my student evaluation. I would appreciate a note or
a call concerning any absences so that we can make arrangements to exchange
documents and information before the next class. If you have a valid reason
for missing a test please notify me as soon as possible so that a make up
exam can be scheduled.
Visit Your Professor:
I will be available for tutoring in the computer learning center daily from 1 pm to 2 pm. and from 6 pm to 7 pm. If these hours don't work into your schedule please see me to arrange a time. Of course, I am always available via our Physics 100 discussion site. If you wish to contact me at home my number is 423-0670. Please call before 10 pm.
Disabilities:
If you have a disability that
might cause problems with access or satisfying course requirements please
contact me so that I can make any necessary arrangements to accomodate you.
