Saturday Night Live

SNL began its 2001/2002 season in a quite unusual way:
“Saturday Night Live,” NBC’s Emmy Award-winning late-night comedy showcase, begins its 27th season on September 29, 2001 (11:30 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. ET/PT) for another year of laughs, surprises and great performances.
As of mid-October, the Saturday Night Live page at NBC.com still had not been updated beyond that line. No guest hosts are listed for this season at all on the official website.
On September 11th, 2001, 18 days prior to "Saturday Night Live"'s 27th season premiere, terrorists attacked the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City. It seemed that life as America knew it had come to a halt, but President George W. Bush and New York Mayor Rudolph Guiliani (two politicians lampooned regularly on "SNL") declared that the city would overcome the tragedy. As proof, the Mayor himself appeared on the season premiere to pay tribute to the men, women and children whose lives were lost in the attack, and to encourage "SNL" to let the show go on. Chris Parnell and Jerry Minor had been let go from the late-night comedy institution, but four new players - Dean Edwards, Seth Meyers, Amy Pohler and Jeff Richards - were added to the cast.
The first episode started with the Mayor of New York, flanked by New York Police and Fire Fighters, whom he called the real heroes. Then he threw out the ceremonial first joke: He said it was time for things to get back to normal. Lorne asked if they can be funny. The Mayor said, "Why start now?" Lorne did a Jack Benny take for the camera and the show kicked off. More on the tribute/opening
The October 6 episode started with This message from President Bush (Will Ferrell) to Osama Bin Ladin
Drew Barrymore almost cancelled for 10/13/01, but told USA Today that she finally told herself she was a coward if she didn't get on a plane and go to New York.

It takes a number of people to keep a show like SNL (Saturday Night Live ) on the air since 1975. People like Lorne Michaels, Gerald Ford, Bill Murray, Richard Nixon, Dan Aykroyd, Ronald Reagan, Chevy Chase, Jimmy Carter, John Belushi, Bill Clinton, Gilda Radner, Nancy Reagan, Martin Short, Al Gore, Tim Meadows (aka The Ladies Man), Jesse Jackson, Chris Kattan, George Bush, Will Ferrell, Janet Reno, Mike Myers (not to be confused with that guy in the Halloween movies).

There have been a number of movie spin-offs too:
The Coneheads
Wayne's World
Stuart Saves His Family
Mom and Dad Save The World
A Night At The Roxbury
Austin Powers
Austin Powers 3, also starring Mike Myers, will be a blaxploitation spoof, teamed with a black female 1970s-style cop

MOVIE & TV MOVES FOR PAST & PRESENT SNL PLAYERS AS OF 9/01
* Cheri Oteri: Set to star in a 13-episode series with CBS.
* Colin Quinn: Working on tentatively titled 'Irish Curse,' which he wrote during his days on MTV's 'Remote Control.'
* Will Ferrell: Joined the cast of Paramount Pictures Zoolander with Ben Stiller, now out in theaters.
* Ana Gasteyer: Working with Danny DeVito (co-star of Jim Carrey's Man On The Moon) and others in MGM's 'What's the Worst That Can Happen.'
* Horatio Sanz: To star in a comedy he cowrote about a rotund tennis star. And he's in the movie Road Trip (2000).
* Harlan Ellison, former writer for Land Of The Giants, has nothing to do with SNL (just thought I'd mention it).

EMMY BEFRIENDS SNL * Last year, SNL won the prestigious Emmy for Outstanding Comedy, Variety or Music Special. This year's Emmy Awards the week of September 11 were postponed. They were rescheduled for the first Sunday in October (when war with Afghanistan started). Latest word is that they will be scheduled, for a third time, at an Army base rather than Hollywood or New York alone.
* An earlier ceremony awarded SNL for Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video for a Series ... and, yes, Outstanding Hairstyling for a Series (and don't think Martha Stewart isn't just fuming about it).

SNL AUDITIONING POSSIBLE WEEKEND UPDATE ANCHORS
SNL has been auditioning several different people for the role of Weekend Update anchor. Those auditioning include both cast members and newcomers to SNL. We keep telling Dan Rather to stop getting in line because his contract is with CBS.
