An On-Line Magazine Dedicated To The Kenpo Arts

Kenpo Journal is a publication dedicated to the perpetuation of the Kenpo arts. Through the electronic medium of the internet, we have found an avenue for those who wish to educate themselves on the varying systems. And how you may ask? Kenpo Journal will provide a doorway into the intricacies of each style, the variances, and the benefits each can afford a martial artist. There will be articles on self-defense training, techniques, forms, sparring, and interviews highlighting various instructors within each issue. Most martial arts publications only scratch the surface on the Kenpo arts because of space limitation and style allotments. Given such, most people will only get a broad overview of Kenpo, but as we all know, there is much, much more.

Kenpo Journal will insure that all of the informational content will be current and up-to-date, supplying the cutting edge on martial arts training. We hope that you will find this publication useful and informative so your experience in the martial arts will be a good one. In all, Kenpo Journal is a magazine by Kenpoists for Kenpoists.

If you would like to contribute to Kenpo Journal, or would like to comment on any particular area within our online-magazine, please feel free to contact the Editor at kenpo1@angelfire.com

KOSHO RYU KEMPO

Kosho Ryu Kempo was brought to the Mitose Clan by traveling monks some time in the 15th century. Kosho stands for the actual name of the Mitose Clan which means, “Old Pine Tree”, and thus, the full distinction of Kosho Ryu Kempo means “The Old Pine Tree Style”. Hawaiian James Mitose has learned Kosho Ryu from his uncle (Choki Motobu) and subsequently brought this style to the United States. The system itself is comprised of percussion maneuvers (hands and feet ), and when observed, one can clearly see the accelerated motion of execution indicative of Kosho Ryu technique. Immobilizations, manipulations and projections, which are characteristic of Jujitsu, are also an integral part of the Kosho Ryu curriculum. The compilation of percussion maneuvers and grappling makes Kosho Ryu Kempo and extremely versatile system of self-defense, encompassing many planes of physical combat.

KARA-HO KEMPO

William K.S. Chow, a student of James Mitose, founded the system of Kara-Ho Kempo. Thunderbolt, which Chow became known as, combined Kosho Ryu Kempo with the Chow family style of 5-Animal Kung Fu. This new composite employs both linear and circular techniques within it’s system, utilizing power and motion to varying degrees relative to the interaction and the given situation. Or, to put it another way, the practitioner will learn to apply both the rigid power and focus of linear mechanics, and the spherical passivity and absorption of circular movements to overcome a physical assault.

AMERICAN KENPO

American Kenpo is much more than a martial art or a sport, it is a body of knowledge predicated on scientific concepts and principles that feed martial technique. American Kenpo transcends the primitive by explicating the interrelationships of human mechanics and their effect through motion. In the end, Mr. Parker knew that if the student could grasp the inner mechanisms of movement, he could then apply the values of energy and motion to any given situation. This, in turn, would elevate the student beyond the primitive nature of fighting to a complete mastery and manipulation of modern combatives.
