The Finesse Game
Coming off his most disappointing season (in 1994-95), Patrick accepted a $400,000 pay cut to play for the Flames last season, and was their most consistent defenseman. Patrick is a gifted offensive defenseman, a wonderful, fluid skater. He skates backwards faster than many NHLers can skate forwards. He carries the puck out of the zone or makes the smart first pass and follows up on the play. The criticism of Patrick over the years is that he makes everything look easy -- so easy it looks like he isn't challenging himself, never pushing the envelope to see if there is another level to his game. The flip side of that -- the conservative side -- is that he is aware of his limitations and plays within them. There will always be two camps of opinion as far as Patrick is concerned. There is no doubt that Patrick is a better support player than a star. He would rather pass than shoot, and if the pass isn't there he will take a stride over the redline and dump in the puck, always timing it well so that his mates are on the chase. He plays the point on the power play and uses a strong, accurate wrist shot that he keeps low and on net. He will also cheat to the top of the circle for a one-timer.

The Physical Game
Patrick has never played to his size and isn't about to start now. He gets in the way. He bumps. He ties people up. But he doesn't bulldoze his crease or scrap one-on-one along the boards. He uses his finesse skills as his defense.

The Intangibles
Patrick is a class act and a gentleman, a grand addition to any team with young defensemen, since he will take the time and trouble to try to help their development. Patrick also goes out of his way to help the non-North Americans feel a part of the team. Patrick has battled colitis for the past two seasons and is a bit fragile, but he played most of the season as a top four defenseman at a time when it looked like he was slowing down to a sixth or even a seventh. His days of big numbers are over.
