The Finesse Game
Barnes's happy days as the left-winger with Ron Francis and Jaromir Jagr ended with Pittsburgh losing Francis to free agency. Unless the Penguins find a suitable number one centre to fill that role, Barnes might move back to centring a checking line. It's hard to begrudge Barnes any of the success he enjoyed last year. He pursues the puck intelligently and finishes his checks. He employs these traits at even strength, killing penalties or on the power play. He reads the play coming out of the zone and uses his anticipation to pick off passes. He plays with great enthusiasm. He has sharply honed puck skills and offensive instincts, which he puts to especially effective use on the power play. He has good quickness and can control the puck in traffic. He uses a slap shot or a wrist shot in tight. Jagr jokingly called Barnes the finisher on their line, and the reality was that Barnes wasted few of the quality chances that came his way. One of his favourite plays was using his right-handed shot for a one-timer on the power play. He has a good work ethic; his effort overcomes his deficiency in size. He's clever and plays a smart small man's game.

The Physical Game
Barnes is not big but he gets in the way. He brings a little bit of grit to the lineup, but what really stands out is his intensity and spirit. He can energize his team with one gutsy shift. Barnes always keeps his feet moving and draws penalties.

The Intangibles
Barnes hit the lottery with his placement on the big line with Francis and Jagr. He may not ever be on the line with Jagr this season, depending on what Pittsburgh does with its centres.

Projection
Barnes far exceeded expectations, but it will be back to reality this season. He will score 20 in a vastly different role.
