Comments:

This is the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers album I would consider the most solid and perfect. The songwriting is top notch and Jeff Lynne's production fits the band perfectly. Nice crisp and well-sounding guitars and a light and airy sound.

Rarely are so many classics to be found on a single album, and if I were set to select 3-4 songs for an anthology, I would have to consider almost all of the twelve tracks on the album. Only the slightly atypical final track "Built to Last" and also the solid, but also slightly ordinary rockers "Out in the Cold" and "Makin' Some Noise" would hardly come into consideration.

Otherwise, "Into the Great Wild Open" is a string of great songs, with a Tom Petty vocally in top form and a band that exudes joy of playing.
