My comments:This album was ready for release in spring 1971, but although it seemed/seems a perfect follow-up to No Dice Apple Records did not feel that it was good enough. Half the album was re-recorded with other producers ( Harrison and Rundgren ) ; the rest of it was scapped.
Which version of Straight Up is the better? The released version or this original version. Well, they're both very very good albums. The original version has very much the same feel as No Dice and the sound is pretty much the same.
Most of the re-recorded songs sound better in Geoff Emericks production. Especially Name of the Game and Perfection are superior to the later versions; they're easier, a bit faster and less "produced". It's unbelieveable that the scapped songs should remain unreleased for more than 20 years; they're all much too good for that. I'll Be The One would have been a hit if it had been released as follow up to No Matter What, and Sing For The Song and Baby Please would be among the better tracks on any album.
If you compare this album to the final released version of Straight Up, of course you'll miss Baby Blue, Take it All, I'd Die Babe, Day After Day and It's Over. Well, these songs could have been saved for the Ass, and they would have made that album even better.
