Comments:

Manfred Mann's Mike D'Abo line-up has always been my favorite version of the group. I have often regretted that there only came three albums ("As Is", "Mighty Garvey" and "Up the Junction") as this group recorded so many fine original songs during this period (from 1966-1969), in parallel with the irresistible hits which, as far as I can see, all are included on this fine 2 CD release. During these 3-4 years, the group members had many things running alongside their Manfred Mann activities, a fact which explains the relatively sparse output.

There could have been another album or two, though, which the many fine outtakes released on the collection "The Ascent of Mann" confirm and if you add some the very nice and rare songs to be found among these BBC recordings, these " unreleased albums ”could have been really great. Mike D'Abo's classic "Handbags and Gladrags" is an obvious choice, but other D'Abo songs found here should have been released in the group's name; not least the great melodic "Oh What a Day".

Of course, it is especially very exciting to hear "new" numbers with the group. Although a couple of the cover songs may not really add anything new to the songs, there are others where you really can enjoy how strong the line-up actually was. Most of the hit songs are arranged identically to the well-known studio versions, but there are fun and nice variations here and there. I could have wished that studio host Brian Matthew didn't talk much into the numbers, but I guess it is not technically possible to remove this. Anyway this a a great addition to a Manfred Mann collection
