Comments:
"Nevermind" from 1991 was Nirvana's big commercial breakthrough – a succes well deserved. The album oozes with originality and shows that heavy "grunge" rock can also mean good songs, with melodic and instrumental qualities and nuance.
Four singles were taken from the album and two of these, Smells Like Teen Spirit ”and“ Come as You Are, ”became major hit successes; especially the former became epoch-making. Critics have continued to praise "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as one of the greatest songs in the history of rock music.
Several of the songs, especially the most melodic ones, have a quiet piece and a more hard hitting, giving the music dynamics and a sense of vulnerability that is probably rare within the genre. This applies to the other two singles, "In Bloom" and "Lithium", which are both great.
Other strong songs include the almost folkish/unplugged "Polly"; which logically was also included in "MTV Unplugged in New York" set, as did the fine and evocative "Something in the Way", which has a surprising viola in the instrumentation.
Also "On a Plain" is a favorite that was also featured on "MTV Unplugged in New York".
A handful of numbers are more ordinary fast rockers; not the ones that made me a fan of the group, but still quite solid.
The group went on to release another excellent album, "In Utero" in 1993, but was abruptly ended with Kurt Cobain's tragic suicide in 1994.
