Comments:

"Friendloverplane 2" is a very fine 18 tracks collection of non-album tracks recorded by The Blue Aeroplanes during their short stay at Ensign Records during 1990-1992. From the 1990 EP "Jacket Hangs" comes "Razor Walk", "Different Now" and "Big Sky". Also from 1990 is the EP "Loved" from which "You Are Loved", "You are Going to Need Somebody" and "World View Blue - acoustic" is taken. "Pony Boy", "Mis-Firing" and "Autumn Journal" come from the 1991 EP "Yr Own World". "Disney Head" and "Talking on the Otherphone" are B-sides from the 1991 single "Boy in a Bubble". "Stranger" and "Trouble Tell Me Alive" come from a rare 1992 flexi disc. ”. . And Stones "is a surprising dance mix of the track originating from the" Swagger "album". Finally, there are four previously unreleased songs.

The group, which is known for its many members and frequent line-up changes, probably had their most consistent and successful years while at Ensign Records. This collection of B-sides, EP tracks and rarities greatly emphasizes this, because the vast majority of these tracks are of high quality and the CD comes out extremely homogeneous. Only a few tracks such as the dance track ”. . And Stones ” may appear a bit out of place.

It's almost like getting a third Ensign album; the other two are "Swagger" (1990) and "Beatsongs" (1991) and "Friendloverplane" compare nicely with these two excellent albums. The group's original songs are usually great; here you could highlight most of tghem , but maybe especially "You Are Loved", "World View Blue", "Growing Up, Growing Down", "For Tim Collins" and "Mis-Firing stand out. There are really successful cover versions of Ray Davies, Richard Thompson and Dave Cousins songs. Especially their version of the Kinks' "Big Sky" is a gem and a highlight. It is no easy task to surpass The Kinks' songs from their excellent "Village Green" album, but I actually think The Blue Aeroplanes succeed in this case. The is characterized by having great guitarists and crisp guitar sound in general. On this album, Rodney Allen, Angelo Bruschini, Alex Lee, Andy MacCreeth and Ian Kearey shine. The first two, together with lead singer Gerad Langley, contribute diligently to the songwriting.

A great addition to the two Ensign albums, and of course to the whole list of great Blue Aeroplanes albums, which is still growing with a new album out in 2017.
