Comments:

There is no denying that Oasis' 1994 debut album was one most important britpop albums of the 90's. It was an instant success at its release, both among buyers and reviewers, and the album soon topped the list of rock's most important albums. Since then the gloss may have faded a bit and the album can now also be found on lists of overrated albums in history. However, the fine singles that came from the album still hold and especially "Live Forever", I find is one of the best recording the group has made. Although most of the tracks on "Definitely Maybe" are quite heavy with several layers of electric guitar, Noel Gallagher's songwriting is generally very melodic which is to a great extent the crucial quality of the group. Liam Gallagher's vocals are also strong and compelling on this album, and his tendency to exaggerate his sneering is minimal.

All four singles "Supersonic", "Shakermaker", "Live Forever" and "Cigarettes and Alcohol" are really great and among the album tracks also "Slide Away" and the different and subdued "Married with Children" are highlights. In fact, the opening track "Rock 'n' Roll Star" was also released later on single in some countries, so it's actually a true cavalcade of fine singles. There are additional versions of the album where the group's great fifth single "Whatever" is included; Of course, that is a version worth looking for.

”Supersonic", "Live Forever" and "Whatever" will always be among my Oasis favorites.
