Even though I wasn't a big fan of The Beau Brummels, I was still tempted by this comprehensive box set with the group. I actually already had four of their original five albums, and I had liked the first two and the later "Bradley's Barn" quite a lot. I thought and hoped there would be exciting non-album tracks and outtakes that could rival the best from these albums.

I can't really say that my expectations were disappointed. There are actually many really nice songs and recordings that were new to me. The set is built up so that you have the five original albums on a CD with a large number of bonus tracks on each (15-20 extra tracks). Furthermore there is a CD with singles A's and B's, a CD with demos and outtakes and a CD with solo stuff from the group's main forces, Ron Elliott and Sal Valentino. As mentioned, there are nice things among the bonus tracks, but they may drown a little among the large amount of slightly less interesting outtakes and demos. As a whole, the CD with singles A's and B's probably is the strongest.

It's a big mouthful to get through; especially the CDs with demos and the solo tracks are somewhat uneven with only a few really good things. The set comes with a very informative booklet of 88 pages, and you are well entertained for many hours; even if a number of tracks don't quite keep up.
