The tasks found below if removed should lead to better performance.

Gmt GMT.exe

(Gator)

Hpfsched

HPFSched.exe

(Hewlett-Packard)

Hpojvdix

HPOjvdix

(Hewlett-Packard

Hpomlch

HPOmlch

(Hewlett-Packard)

Hpzstatx

HPzstatx.exe

(Hewlett-Packard)

Nightmarish Printer Status Monitor task which is installed by the setup program of many HP DeskJet printers when installing on a Windows 9x/ME PC.  HPZSTATX does not get installed if you install your printer via the "Add Printer" icon in the Printers Panel – it only gets installed if you run the HP setup program.  Everything that HPZSTATX does, it does badly : it uses too many system resources, and, worse, it frequently "hangs" the printing of documents with, in most cases, only a reboot solving the problem.  This is twisted !  A printer manufacturer producing a buggy piece of software which so often prevents the user from.... printing !!!

Recommendation :

If you have been experiencing printing jobs not coming out, get rid of HPZSTATX using one of the following methods :  either delete HPZSTATX.EXE from the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, or disable it in Startup Manager.

Hxdl Hxdl.exe

(Alset)
Alset’s HelpExpress.  See HXIUL below for more details.

Recommendation :
As with HXIUL, uninstall HelpExpress via the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Control Panel.  If you cannot see HelpExpress as an application to remove, then delete HXDL with Startup Manager

Hxiul

HXIUL.exe

(Alset)

Alset's HelpExpress.  Useless background adware which tells you when you need to buy printer cartridges, and where to buy them, and all sorts of other things like this.

Recommendation :
Firstly Alset are the same crowd as Aveo who produce the similarly useless Aveo Attune.  Secondly, at the time of writing of this entry (March 2002), Alset and Aveo seem to have gone out of business.  Thirdly, as with Aveo Attune, some users have experienced conflicts with other software.  De-install HelpExpress immediately via the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Control Panel.

Instantaccess

InstantAccess.exe

(Xerox)

Background program which interacts with Xerox Textbridge’s Instant Access feature app.  This gets installed when you install the Xerox Textbridge OCR software.  Few users use Instant Access.  Worse, we have experienced this background program to often cause software installation problems.

Recommendation :
Not necessary, Instant Access works perfectly well without this background program having been pre-loaded at boot

Kernel32 Kern32.exe

Kernel32.exe

(???)
You have one of the Badtrans viruses.

Khooker

KHooker.exe

(Silicon Integrated Systems – SiS)

SiS Keyboard Daemon.  System Tray utility which gets installed by the drivers of the latter day SiS VGA cards.  The utility itself is not of much use in our opinion and may occasionally be contributing to Windows startup problems, although we have not been able to establish this for certain.
Recommendation :
Delete using Startup Manager

Loadqm LoadQM.exe

(Microsoft)
This task loads the MSN Queue Manager and is installed when you install MSN Explorer or MSN Messenger.  LOADQM gobbles up system resources and appears on most end-users’ Task Lists who come to us complaining of low System & User Resources or very slow, "crawling", PCs.  In October 2002 this is still one of the worst behaved Microsoft programs !

Recommendation :
Disable immediately, or Delete using Startup Manager.

tsstart

Ltsstart.exe

(Lotus – IBM)

Lotus QuickStart 97.  Having this program running in the background supposedly enables any program in Lotus SmartSuite to start faster.

Recommendation :
As with Microsoft’s OSA.EXE, this program is a total utter waste of time.  The benefits in today’s world of fast PCs are non-existent.  Delete with Startup Manager

Lxdboxcp LXDBOXCP.exe

(Lexmark)
Lexmark DOS-Printing Control Program for the Lexmark 2050.  Background task installed with the drivers for the printer.

Recommendation :
This task is only needed if you print from DOS programs to your Lexmark 2050.  Otherwise disable it with Startup Manager, particularly since it often interferes with other devices that use your printer port(s), such as parallel port tape or CD-ROM drives, or additional printers

Mcupdate

McUpdate

(McAfee – Network Associates)

AutoUpdate & AutoUpgrade background utility task which comes with McAfee VirusScan 4.x.  Its purpose is to automatically update your McAfee software with the latest virus updates and software updates whenever you connect to the Internet.

Recommendation :
Disable the AutoUpdate feature within McAfee VirusScan and make a point of regularly updating VirusScan manually.  In our opinion there are too many problems with MCUPDATE to bother with it.

Mdm

MDM.exe

(Microsoft)

Machine Debug Manager.  Windows 98/ME.  This is used purely by Technically Advanced Users and Developers, and in very specific cases at that.  It is not needed in most normal day-to-day uses of a PC.

Recommendation :
There is a bug with MDM where it will regularly create zero-length temporary files in the Windows folder and not delete them.  If you do not do regular housekeeping you can end up with hundreds of such files.  Disable, or best, delete using Startup Manager.

Mediadet Mediadet.exe

(Creative Labs)
Creative Labs Disc Detector background application which gets installed with some Creative Labs sound card drivers.  Disc Detector detects when you insert a CD in your CD-ROM drive and then automatically starts the appropriate application for it.  You can determine whether it should open in Creative PlayCenter, or some other audio player.

Recommendation :
Windows does this very well already.  It beggars belief that Creative Labs should have thought it a great idea to clutter the System Tray with an application that duplicates what Windows already does well.  As with Creative’s CTNOTIFY, we recommend you disable MEDIADET. To do so, open the "Disc Detector" icon in the Control Panel and uncheck "Enable Disc Detector" in the General tab.

Mhotkey

MHOTKEY

(??)

Newsupd NewsUpd.exe

(Creative Labs)

Osa

Osa9

OSA.exe

OSA9.exe

(Microsoft)

Microsoft Office’s Office Startup Application. Present in Microsoft Office 97, 2000, and XP where it is called OSA9.EXE.  According to Microsoft, OSA enables Microsoft Office programs to start faster.  It is our view, however, that most Microsoft background programs whose purpose is to enable you to "do something" faster, are a total utter waste of time and, worse, they also sometimes have extremely irritating side-effects which completely negate their supposed benefits (such as the annoying and infamous FindFast).
Recommendation :
Delete or disable using Startup Manager.

Osd OSD.exe

(Netropa Corp)
Netropa’s OnScreen Display System Tray icon which comes installed on a number of blue-chip manufacturers’ PCs, such as DELL, Compaq, HP, IBM, Acer. etc...  If you right-click on the icon you can change the colour or font of your display, and you can also modify other display settings.
Recommendation :
This icon simply adds to the clutter of the system tray – it adds nothing that you cannot do by going into the Display Settings in the Control Panel.  Worse, OSD interferes with games which change the volume during the game, it has significant compatibility problems with some graphics drivers, and it causes some screen savers to crash.  Delete immediately in Startup Manager.
Ossproxy OssProxy.exe

(Netsetter / Marketscore)
Software which gets installed on your PC when you install the Internet Acceleration software from Marketscore (previously Netsetter).  Note that you may have installed Marketscore unwittingly while installing other software.
Recommendation :
There are doubts as to whether this Internet acceleration really works – in our opinion, if you have a DSL/ADSL or Cable Modem connection, then you do not need this type of service.  Most importantly, read your Marketscore License Agreement – if you do not like what you read in it, de-install the service and software.  To remove in Windows 9x/ME, do "Start \ Run" and type "C:\Windows\System\NSCheck /uninstall". To remove in Windows NT4/2000/XP do "Start \ Run" and type NSCheck /uninstall

Onflow

Onflow.exe

(Onflow Corp.)
