Petra

The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, In the loftiness of your dwelling place, Who say in your heart, 'Who will bring me down to earth?' "Though you build high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," declares the LORD. (Obadiah 1:3-4). This language calls to mind the ancient city of Petra. By the end of the 4th century B.C., Petra would become the capital of Edom. It characterized the words of this prophecy as a city "in the cleft of the rock."

It the Clefts of the Rock

There is only one way into the city of Petra. It is a narrow path through towering cliffs that made the city easy to defend.

The "Treasury"

The first sight with which one is met upon coming into the city is the grand structure known as "the Treasury." It wasn't used for that purpose, but the name has continued to be used. Carved out of the mountain as are many of the buildings of Petra, it stands as a sober and magnificent guardian over the city.

The Theatre

The city boasted a large theatre, cut out of the side of the mountain.
