Chapter 4, Lesson 7

RAS

RAS allows remote users to work on the following systems as if they were connected directly to the network: Windows NT . . . . .

. . . . .

RAS Protocols

Protocols supported by RAS can be examined according to their functions those protocols that transmit data over LANs and those that transmit data over wide area networks (WANs). Windows NT supports LAN protocols such as Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Internet Packet Exchange/ Sequenced Packet Exchange (IPX/SPX), NWLink, and NetBEUI. Windows NT also supports remote access protocols such as Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), and the Microsoft RAS protocol.

. . . . .

LAN Protocols

Windows NT RAS supports NetBEUI, TCP/IP, and IPX. Thus, you can integrate Windows NT RAS into existing Microsoft, UNIX, or NetWare networks using the PPP remote access standard. Windows NT RAS clients can also connect to existing SLIP-based remote access servers (primarily UNIX servers).

When you install and configure RAS, any protocols already installed on the computer (such as NetBEUI, TCP/IP, and IPX) are automatically enabled for RAS.

Remote Access Protocols

RAS connections can be established through SLIP or PPP.

SLIP

SLIP is an industry standard that addresses TCP/IP connections made over serial lines. SLIP was first developed in 1984 to support TCP/IP networking over low-speed serial interfaces. It is supported by Windows NT dial-up networking and gives Windows NT clients easier access to Internet services.

SLIP has several limitations when compared to the newer PPP. SLIP servers cannot use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol/Windows Internet Naming Service (DHCP/WINS). SLIP connections typically rely on text-based logon sessions and usually require a scripting system to automate the logon process. Although SLIP supports TCP/IP, it does not support IPX/SPX or NetBEUI. In addition, unlike PPP, SLIP transmits authentication passwords as clear text, thereby making the system less secure. Windows NT RAS server does not have a SLIP server component, so it cannot be used as a SLIP Server.

97 F PPP Multilink is a means of increasing data transmission rates by utilizing multiple physical links as one logical link. Only the client must be able to support multiple links for this to work. 229 table.4
99% Sure it is False. The last sentence of the question above and the answer below conflict.

PPP Multilink Protocol (MP)

The PPP MP provides the means to increase data transmission rates. MP accomplishes this by combining multiple physical links into a logical bundle to increase bandwidth. Based on the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard RFC 1717, RAS using PPP MP allows you to easily combine analog modem paths, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) paths, and even mixed analog and digital communications links on both client and server computers. For example, a client with two 28-Kbps modems and two phone lines can use MP to establish a single 56-Kbps connection to an MP server with two 28-Kbps modems and phone lines. This will speed up access to the Internet or to the Intranet, and cut down on the amount of time spent remotely connected, thus reducing remote access cost.

Both the dial-up networking client and the RAS Server need to have MP enabled for this protocol to be used.

98 T When callback security is implemented, the Server receiving the call calls back the client at a predetermined telephone number or at a number that was provided during the initial call. 226.2
100% sure its True. Almost exact wording found.

Quote from Textbook:

Callback Security

The RAS Server can be configured to provide callbacks as a means of increasing security. When callback security is used, the server receives the call from the client computer, disconnects the connection, and then calls the client back either at a preset telephone number or at a number that was provided during the initial call. This allows another level of security by guaranteeing that the connection to the local network was made from a trusted site, such as a branch office.

99 TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NWLink, NetBUIE Name two LAN protocols support to RAS. 226.3
100 PPTP What protocol is supplied by Windows NT to provide for secure communications over the Internet using RAS? 224.4.4
100% sure its PPTP. It was mentioned in class and clearing defined in textbook.

PPTP is a technology that supports multiprotocol virtual private networks (VPNs). This allows you to remotely access your corporate network securely across the Internet. Using PPTP, you can establish a connection to the Internet and then establish a connection to the RAS server on the Internet using PPTP.

Using PPTP to connect to a remote network offers computers running Windows NT the following advantages:

. . . .

Security. PPTP provides security through data encryption. A PPTP connection over the Internet is encrypted and works with the NetBEUI, TCP/IP, and IPX protocols. Data sent by means of a PPTP tunnel consists of encapsulated PPP packets. If dial-up networking is configured to use data encryption, the data sent by means of PPTP is encrypted when sent.

RAS Security Features

Windows NT RAS incorporates a number of security measures to validate remote client access to a network.
