Being one of Japan's greatest animes by far better then anything else I've seen thats closey related to it. By watching this anime you will become depressed due to the darkness this anime brings you into and will give you an eerie feeling about everything around you and will make you question our existence. This anime from a certain point of view is mostly about battle tactics with the EVAs (

Yeah it gets even trippier but let me introduce the characters first. Shinji Ikari is a 14 year old boy and is the main character(see image archive for pictures for the characters). Rei Ayanami a quiet 14 year old girl. Asuka Shouryo Langely a German and Japanese girl who has a attitude and pushiness about her.
These are the first three EVA pilots.
You dont really need to know much more about the other characters and you really should see this series.
Later in the series you find out that something called the second impact caused the ice caps to melt and killed nearly 3/4s of the worlds population and nearly every city is under water. Soon after the second impact 17 of God's Angels roamed the earth and seem to destroy everything. A specail angel destroying company name NERV now comes into place and captures two of these angels namely Adam and Lilith. Adam is the first human said to be in the Bible. In other cultures Lillith was said to be Adams wife before Eve. They captured these angels and made Evas from the angels blood like cloning them but into huge robots with nearly impenetrable armor and not to mention a God gifted Absoulute Terror Field which allows to conventional weapon to penetrate or cause damage to them. Only the Evas can penetrate other angel's Absoulute terror field. The reason the Evas needed pilots were because unlike the angels the evas had no souls so they borrowed to pilots souls to work. You later find out after the destroy many of the angels that humans are closely related to angels they are our other possibility of living but god chose our form (though) greatly weaker to live and flourish the earth. Near the end of the series the anime reveals the angels are only trying to kill one of the pilots namely Rei Ayanami who was made of lilliths blood and somehow captured Lilliths soul inside of her body. Her body made the angels soul unclean and the angel tried to play God and such and in the end destroyed every living thing on the earth and remade it all in her own shape. But Shinji who helped her with somehow releaseing Adam's soul which was closely human somehow recaptured our shape and we continued on as humans but without any knowing of what happened and what Angels were.
