When I first began reading Nsync Fan Fiction, (and this is not long folks, I started last september) I had no idea what "slash" was. See, Cali and Sunny got me started on "It's Only Me" by Fiction Lyn. That is definitely NOT slash. I didn't even know that fanfiction existed before then. (Hard to believe, I know)
So I started slow. Then one day Cali casually mentioned to me that she once read this really good story where Lance and JC got together called "Clandestine Desires". I at first thought I had heard her wrong. "Together? Like gay together?" She assured me that they were and it was "cute". I was intrigued. Nsync members together? This couldn't be true. Luckily, she had it either printed out somewhere or saved on her old computer.
This prompted a frantic three hour search at her cottage through the entire hard drive of her old computer. Nothing. Sigh. I would never read this gay Nsync story. But Sunny came to save the day.
Yay! She had it on a disc! She brought it up one weekend she visited, and I read it (I'll admit it) twice. Something about it was just...good. I began to (very slowly) read more slash, coming across it as I surfed the "net". When we started this site in November, and I began by writing the Writer's Block outlines, I still hadn't read much slash. Then, Tired Of The Lie was born. I started it as an outline, and I thought it would be a hilarious joke if Lance and Joey were together. And it was. Cali and I laughed about it a lot.
Then christmas vacation came, and I was bored. I decided to write this funny story. But as I got into it, I got serious. As the first months of the year went by, I began to read more and more slash, and less and less "het". (except for those stories where Justin is a tortured soul. I LOVE those) Cali made fun of my new addicted a lot at first, and I was in denial. But now I am addicted and will admit it to most. I love to read it, and I love to write it. When I get an idea, it's usually for slash. I'm almost done with Tired Of the Lie, and I recently wrote two short slash stories. Yay for me!
I find that slash is superior to "het" fiction in many ways. Slash stories have better ideas in my opinion that are not often done too often. Let's face it, when two members of the group get together, they don't bring all their friends to their own concerts so that they can all hook up. These relationships usually also start with a friendship, which makes them more believable and stronger. And they are also the cutest little couples ever, usually with supportive bandmates. There are more situations that they are in together, they go through together, and this makes them closer. They spend a lot of time together. What is cuter than two of them cuddling on the bus in between cities? Nothing! I know a good thing when I see it, and this is a good thing.
I will admit, I am a picky person when it comes to slash. There have been many instances when Cali and I are sitting silently at our computers, and I will have an outburst at a story that is doing something stupid. Here are my personal rules concerning the reading and writing of slash:
1. Certain pairings should never occur. The word Timbertrick comes to mind. (cougholdmanyoungman=grosscough)
2. While we are on this subject, I'm sorry folks, but CHRIS IS NOT GAY. Ever. I mean, I know that they aren't really gay, (well, at least I think so) but you can imagine them gay, some easier than others. Chris is the only one that I can just not see gay. Ever. Ew. He is so purely heterosexual. Therefore, I will never read anything where Chris is gay. So there.
3. Sometimes, a little smut is ok. Good even. But when a story is all hardcore gay smut all the time, I get a little angry. Make them cute and cuddly for goodness sakes, not sweaty and all tangled up for pages and pages and pages.
4. Group slash is NOT GOOD OR BELIEVABLE. First of all, most of the group ones are extremely smutty; they aren't all in a relationship together. Let's face it, they aren't all gay. And to imagine them doing circle jerks in the bus after every concert doesn't do it for me. If it does it for you, then you must be a gay man. Or a girl with sick taste and an identity crisis.
5. Slash only works when it is two members. When there is a relationship with an outside man, that is for some unknown reason disgusting to me. Which makes me a hypocrite and a weirdo, I know, but whatever. This is my opinion. Keep it within the group folks. (but remember, no Chris)
6. Humor stories make me laugh. Thought I would just say that. Especially ones where they get married and have best men and matron of honors, and Justin is the ring bearer. Hahaha.
7. Angst is that much better when it's slashy. That's a proven fact. Slash angst lalalaaa.....
8. Be careful when writing any slash with Justin, especially when they are touring in Europe and he is UNDERAGE. Only Timberbass/Basslake pairings are acceptable at this time.
9. Other then pairings with Chris, one pairing makes me queasy above all. I don't care if they're cute or if they are smutty, but Joshtin is ickyful. I can't see them together. It is very rare that I will read and like one. Too much pretty, I guess. If it was possible for two men to have kids, they would either have the most beautiful or the most freakish looking ones around. No middle ground there. So it's a good thing that sperm and sperm just equals up to...a lot of sperm.(and a big mess)
Well, I have read many many good stories, but finding and remembering the sites is a hard one. I am working on it, so this will be a work-in-progress for awhile while I compile!
